Calgary Flames vs Philadelphia Flyers: Wolf’s rebound against a road trip that started 4-9-4
Dustin Wolf stopped 26 of 27 shots in San Jose on Monday and 27 more in Seattle on Wednesday. Those two starts matter because he’d been sitting on a 4.81 goals-against average and an .839 save percentage as recently as 30 October.
I’m taking that recent sample seriously. Calgary needs its goaltender to hold up with Devin Cooley on injured reserve, and Philadelphia, which visits Scotiabank Saddledome on Sunday 8 November, puck drop 7:00pm ET, isn’t an offense that punishes many teams.
The Flames are 7-8-1 with 15 points, and they lost 2-1 in Seattle when Matty Beniers scored 55 seconds into overtime. It was their first overtime loss of the season, and it closed a three-game road trip that also brought a 2-1 win over the Sharks.
Philadelphia went into Thursday night’s game at Madison Square Garden at 4-9-4, the first stop on a five-game road trip. Minnesota beat the Flyers 4-2 on Tuesday after building a 3-0 lead 42 seconds into the second period.
Calgary won both meetings last season, 2-1 in Philadelphia on 2 November 2025 and 5-1 at the Saddledome on 31 December, when Wolf made 26 saves.
Calgary Flames: 5-3-0 at home, with Wolf carrying the crease
Calgary’s record splits cleanly. The Flames are 2-5-1 on the road, which leaves them 5-3-0 in their own building, and the last home stretch included a 4-1 win over Detroit on 24 October and a 6-2 win over Seattle on 30 October.
The goal difference isn’t pretty. By my count from the game scores, they’ve scored 39 and allowed 55 in 16 games, and a big share of that damage came before this last week. Over the five games before Seattle, they went 3-2-0, scoring three a game and allowing 2.8.
Cooley was 4-3 with a .914 save percentage before he went down in the collision with Colton Dach at Edmonton on 28 October. He’s expected back on 14 November, so Sunday should fall to Wolf or to Arsenii Sergeev, the backup in Seattle. Friday’s home game against Anaheim is the reason that call isn’t settled, and it makes this four games in seven days.
The depth has been thinned as well. Jonathan Huberdeau is out with a hip injury until around 28 November, Samuel Honzek is expected back on 15 November and Connor Zary was listed out with a knee problem until 14 November. Brennan Othmann missed Wednesday’s game with an upper-body injury.
Younger players have filled part of the gap. Matvei Gridin has five goals, Stromgren scored his first NHL goal as the game-winner in San Jose, and Morgan Frost’s assist in Seattle was his 200th NHL point. Joel Farabee had four points in the 6-2 win over Seattle.

Philadelphia Flyers: 37 goals in 17 games and a power play near the bottom
By the game scores, Philadelphia has 37 goals in 17 games, or 2.18 a night, and it has allowed 58. A team that’s 21 goals underwater doesn’t get many nights off, and the schedule won’t give it any now that the road trip has started.
The win over Utah on 1 November, 6-3 at home, is the outlier in the recent run. Around it sit a 5-4 loss to Anaheim on 24 October, a 4-3 overtime loss to Columbus on 27 October, a 5-2 loss in Washington on 28 October and Tuesday’s defeat to Minnesota.
Joseph Woll and Dan Vladar have split the net without either pulling clear. Before 27 October, Woll had a .904 save percentage and a 2.99 goals-against average, and Vladar had .900 and 3.15. Vladar stopped 18 of 21 shots against the Wild.
The power play has ranked near the bottom of the league, though Denver Barkey’s move to the bumper spot has helped. He scored his first goal of the season there on Tuesday, set up by Trevor Zegras, who then took a 10-minute misconduct. Jamie Drysdale had four assists across the last two games.
Matvei Michkov is the one Flyer I’d worry about, with 14 goals and 10 assists in his last 24 regular-season games, a run that dates to 3 April. Rasmus Ristolainen’s hand injury has him listed until around 11 November, and Nikita Grebenkin is out long term after back surgery.
Probable lineup Calgary Flames: Farabee, Backlund, Coronato / Gridin, Pospisil, Strome / Sharangovich, Frost, Suniev / Stromgren, Castagna, Klapka; Bahl, Nemec / Middleton, Whitecloud / Kuznetsov, Parekh; Wolf (lines from Wednesday’s game, starter not announced)
Probable lineup Philadelphia Flyers: Zegras, Dvorak, Konecny / Foerster, Barkey, Tippett / Martone, Cates, Michkov / Knuble, Couturier, Acciari; Sanheim, Drysdale / York, Bonk / Seeler, Benoit; Woll or Vladar (projected lines, starter not announced)

Our prediction: Calgary Flames to win
I’d back Calgary at home. The Flames are 5-3-0 at the Saddledome, they’ve won both meetings from last season, and Philadelphia scores 2.18 goals a game with a power play that’s near the bottom of the league.
The honest worry is the crease. Wolf’s season numbers are poor, and if Friday’s game against Anaheim leaves Sergeev in net on Sunday, Michkov’s line gets a real chance. His two most recent starts still produced 53 saves on about 56 shots.
Philadelphia also arrives three nights into a five-game trip after allowing 58 goals in 17 games. I’ll take the team that’s home and has two extra days in its own building.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
