Brighton & Hove Albion vs Leeds United: two very different starts collide at the Amex 
Brighton scored four goals in half an hour on opening day, then shipped four at Stamford Bridge the following week. Two faces in 15 days, and a side that is still hard to pin down.
Leeds United have gone the other way. A winner in the 88th minute at Nottingham, then a tight draw against Brentford: the Peacocks are moving slowly, but they are moving.
The table tells its own story. Leeds have four points after two rounds, Brighton three, and both clubs are bunched together in mid-table.
The game is set for Saturday 5 September at 15:00 local time, 16:00 in France, at the American Express Community Stadium. NBC and Peacock are showing it in the United States.
Recent history leans toward Yorkshire: Leeds beat Brighton 1-0 at Elland Road on 17 May. Across league meetings, though, Brighton still hold the edge with four wins in eight.
So here is the big question. Can the attack that shredded Aston Villa in 30 minutes rediscover its bite against a team that gives away very few clear chances?
The fixture list adds another layer of tension. Both sides go into round three before the first international break of the season.
Neither team has found full rhythm yet. Three points separate eighth and ninth, which makes this match a big one for the September pecking order.
Spring 2026 had already shown Brighton’s split personality. They beat Wolverhampton 3-0 and Chelsea 3-0 at the Amex, but lost 3-1 at Newcastle.
The common thread in those big wins was the venue. Brighton’s three most convincing recent victories have all come at home.
Brighton, an attack that strikes in bursts 
On 23 August, Brighton hammered Aston Villa 4-0 at the Amex. All four goals came between the 8th and 31st minute, with the opener going down as a Victor Lindelof own goal.
That spell says everything about Brighton’s ability to suffocate an opponent in waves. It also says the rest of the match was a good deal flatter.
A week later at Stamford Bridge, the script flipped. Chelsea were 3-0 up after half an hour through Lavia, Joao Pedro and Pedro Neto, and Brighton eventually went down 4-3 after hauling themselves back level.
Maxim De Cuyper remains the key man down the left. The Belgian scored against Villa with four shots, one on target and three chances created from full-back.
Diego Gomez also provided an assist in that game. He added three shots, two on target and two chances created in 86 minutes.
The injury list is a problem heading into this one. Yankuba Minteh, Stefanos Tzimas and Evan Ferguson are out, Jack Hinshelwood is also expected to miss out, and Georginio Rutter plus Kaoru Mitoma remain doubts.
Midfielder Carlos Baleba left the club at the end of August for Manchester United in a deal worth around 70 million pounds. Brighton are rebuilding their midfield balance on the fly.

Leeds United, the art of winning ugly 
Leeds opened their season with a 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest. Anton Stach settled it with a free kick in the 88th minute.
For 87 minutes, neither side created anything close to a major chance. The result owed more to control than attacking spark.
The 1-1 draw with Brentford at Elland Road backed that up. Four points from two games, with a defence that is standing up: the base is there.
Up front, the output is still the weak spot. Dominic Calvert-Lewin had three attempts on the opening day and did not hit the target once.
Ethan Ampadu and Anton Stach are the pair pulling the strings in midfield. Their ability to disrupt the opposition explains plenty of those four points already collected.
The summer business has also firmed up the back line. Tarik Muharemovic, signed from Sassuolo for around 34 million pounds, is already in the expected starting XI.
Last season’s finish had already set the tone for the Peacocks. That 1-0 win over Brighton on 17 May came after a run that included a 3-1 win over Burnley and a 1-1 draw at Tottenham.
As for the squad, Mateo Joseph is ruled out, while Wilfried Gnonto, Gabriel Gudmundsson and Ilia Gruev are doubts. Melvin Bard, who arrived on loan from Nice in the August 2026 window, gives them another option on the left.
Expected Brighton XI: Verbruggen ; Boscagli, Dunk, Vuskovic, De Cuyper ; Wieffer, Ayari, Gross ; Gomez, Rutter. The 11th name is still uncertain, with Hinshelwood expected to miss out.
Expected Leeds United XI: Trafford ; Muharemovic, Bijol, Rodon ; Justin, Ampadu, Stach, Bogle ; Aaronson, Wilson ; Calvert-Lewin.

Our prediction: Brighton win
Brighton put four past Aston Villa in 30 minutes, then hit three more at Stamford Bridge. Neither side in this fixture is producing that kind of firepower.
Leeds, by contrast, have scored two goals in two games, one of them a free kick in the 88th minute. That probably will not be enough at the Amex if this opens up.
The Seagulls are at home, with De Cuyper and Gomez flying. Brighton take the three points.
