Besiktas vs Istanbul Basaksehir: a perfect home record, and a defence that keeps letting goals in Süper Lig

Besiktas played Crystal Palace in the Europa League on Thursday night, led through a Wilfred Ndidi goal in first-half stoppage time, fell 2-1 behind after goals from Yeremy Pino and Jean-Philippe Mateta, and needed Junior Olaitan’s 73rd-minute equaliser to take a 2-2 draw. Four days later they host Istanbul Basaksehir at the Tupras Stadium, on Monday 26 October with kick-off at 16:00 UK time.

That Palace game cost Vincenzo Italiano more than two points’ worth of effort. Fabio Miretti injured his shoulder and is out, and he joins Orkun Kokcu, who is expected to miss this one with the foot injury he picked up against Hoffenheim. Milot Rashica is also a concern after a thigh problem on international duty with Kosovo.

Those absences arrive at an awkward point in the league. Besiktas are fifth with 15 points from eight matches, four off the pace, and they’ve lost two of their last three league games, 3-2 at Amed SK and 2-0 at Trabzonspor on 19 October. The home record is the part that’s held: four league games at the Tupras Stadium, four wins.

Basaksehir come in tenth with 11 points under Nuri Sahin, and their form has turned a corner. After three defeats and a draw from four matches, including a 5-0 loss at Amed SK, they’re unbeaten in three, with a 4-0 win over Genclerbirligi, a 0-0 at Konyaspor and a 2-1 win over Gaziantep.

The bookmakers make Besiktas heavy favourites at 1.38, which is fair given the home record and the gap in quality. The more interesting question is whether Besiktas can keep Basaksehir out, because the evidence from their last six competitive matches says they probably won’t.

Besiktas: six games in a row without a clean sheet Besiktas

Besiktas have conceded in each of their last six competitive matches. The sequence runs 4-1 against Marseille, 3-2 at Amed SK, 2-1 against Kocaelispor, 3-2 at Hoffenheim, 2-0 at Trabzonspor and 2-2 against Palace. That’s 11 goals against in six games, across two competitions and against opponents of very different quality.

The attack has generally made up for it, which is why the results have mostly been good. They scored four against Marseille and three in Germany, and they’ve put six past Çorum Belediyespor at home in the league. Leandro Trossard and Hyeon-Gyu Oh give them a forward line that can score against most sides in Turkey.

Losing Kokcu and Miretti changes how they control games, though. Both are central midfielders Italiano uses to keep the ball, and without them he’s likely to rely on Ndidi as a single holding player with Cerny, Olaitan and Trossard ahead of him. That’s an attacking setup with less protection in front of the back four.

The back four itself is likely to be Murillo, Agbadou, Topcu and Yilmaz, with Nubel in goal. It’s a defence that has let in two or more in four of those last six matches, and the turnaround from Thursday to Monday leaves little time to work on it.

The home record suggests they’ll find a way to win anyway. Four from four at the Tupras Stadium this season, and two straight wins over Basaksehir, 2-1 at home in September 2025 and 3-2 away in February 2026. Both of those games had goals at both ends.

Basaksehir: unbeaten in three, but without an away win all season Istanbul Basaksehir

Basaksehir haven’t won any of their four away matches in all competitions this season, losing three. In the league that’s two defeats and a draw from three trips, and only Caykur Rizespor have a worse away record. The 5-0 at Amed SK was the low point, the 0-0 at Konyaspor the only point gained.

Their recent recovery has been built at home. The 2-1 over Gaziantep came through a late Umut Gunes goal after Eldor Shomurodov had scored one and set up another, and the 4-0 against Genclerbirligi was their most convincing performance of the season.

Shomurodov is the leading scorer, and Umut Bozok averages 1.5 shots on target per match, the highest in the squad. With Skov Olsen and Brnic either side of Shomurodov and Bozok up front, Sahin has a front four that can hurt a defence leaving space behind it.

This ground hasn’t been a bad place for them either. In their last four visits to Besiktas they’ve won twice and lost twice, and both wins came with clean sheets, including a 2-0 in April 2025. They also scored twice in February’s 3-2 home defeat, so they’ve found the net in three of the last four meetings.

There are fitness doubts over Jerome Opoku, Christopher Operi and Edin Visca, which could weaken the defence and the wide areas. Sahin’s side are likely to sit in a 4-2-3-1 with Kemen and Kaluzinski screening the back four.

Probable lineup Besiktas: Nubel; Murillo, Agbadou, Topcu, Yilmaz; Ndidi; Cerny, Olaitan, Trossard; Hyeon-Gyu Oh
Probable lineup Istanbul Basaksehir: Sengezer; Karbownik, Bayram, Ba, Kharebashvili; Kemen, Kaluzinski; Skov Olsen, Shomurodov, Brnic; Bozok

Our prediction: Both teams to score – Yes (odds 1.61)

Besiktas haven’t kept a clean sheet in six competitive matches, and they’re now without two midfielders who usually help protect the defence. Basaksehir have scored in three of the last four meetings between the clubs and have attackers in form, with Shomurodov leading the scoring and Bozok testing goalkeepers more than anyone else in the squad.

The argument against is Basaksehir’s away record, with no goal in two of their three league trips. Those came at Amed SK and Konyaspor, though, and neither opponent attacks the way Besiktas have in recent weeks. A home side that pushes forward with Trossard, Cerny and Olaitan tends to leave room on the counter.

I’d expect Besiktas to win, but at 1.38 the price is too short. Both teams to score at 1.61 fits the pattern of their last six games and of the recent meetings between these two sides.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
