Bayern Munich vs Magdeburg: a 2000 shoot-out, a 6-1 weekend and a manager in hospital
On 1 November 2000, Magdeburg held Bayern Munich 1-1 after extra time in the second round of the DFB-Pokal and won the shoot-out 4-2. Almost 26 years later the draw has paired them again at the same stage, this time at the Allianz Arena.
Kick-off is 19:45 UK time on Wednesday 28 October. It’s a one-off tie, with extra time and penalties if needed, and nobody at Bayern needs reminding how the last one ended.
Bayern come into it top of the Bundesliga with 17 points from seven games, unbeaten, with 25 goals scored and six conceded. They won 3-1 at Freiburg on Sunday, Upamecano, Gnabry and Olise among the scorers, a week after beating RB Leipzig 6-1.
The weekend wasn’t all good news. Vincent Kompany collapsed at training on Friday and is in hospital in a stable condition, and his assistant Aaron Danks took charge in Freiburg. The club has talked about days rather than weeks, but there’s no firm date for his return.
Magdeburg are fifth in the 2. Bundesliga, two points off the promotion places, and they’ve just produced the biggest second-division win in their history: 6-1 at home to Karlsruhe on Saturday. Petrik Sander’s side have scored 20 goals in nine league games.
Bayern are around 1.03 to win, a price nobody should touch. I’ve gone to the goals market instead, because Bayern’s scoring at home this season has been relentless and Magdeburg don’t sit back.
Bayern Munich: 25 league goals, but seven conceded in three draws
Bayern’s last six games tell two stories. In the Bundesliga they beat Union Berlin 7-0, drew 2-2 at Augsburg, thrashed Leipzig 6-1 and won at Freiburg. In the Champions League they drew 3-3 at Viking and 2-2 at home to Arsenal.
That’s 23 goals in six matches, and seven conceded across the three draws. Bayern have scored at least twice in every one of those games, and they’ve also conceded at least twice in half of them.
The absences are piling up. Luis Díaz, who scored a hat-trick against Leipzig on 17 October, is out for several weeks with a muscle tear. Joshua Kimmich is on leave after the death of his father, and Musiala, Neuer, Kim Min-jae and Pavlović are all doubts.
That means changes, and probably a lot of them. Urbig is likely in goal, with Stanišić, Upamecano, Tah and Brown in front of him, Laimer and Bischof in midfield and Karl, Olise and Gnabry behind the striker. Kane may start or be rested.
Bayern reached this round with a 4-1 win at Osnabrück on 2 September. Even with a rotated side, I’d expect Danks to pick enough attacking players to make the gap obvious early.

Magdeburg: 20 goals in nine games, and a Bayern loanee in midfield
Magdeburg’s season has swung from one extreme to the other. They lost 6-1 at home to Braunschweig in August, and on Saturday they beat Karlsruhe by the same score. In between they beat Kaiserslautern 3-0 and Hannover 3-0, and lost 2-1 at Hertha and 2-0 at Dynamo Dresden.
The goals come from the front three. Iyoha, signed from Fortuna Düsseldorf in the summer, and Żukowski have 11 league goals between them, and Baris Atik has five assists. Magdeburg have scored three or more in four league games this season, against Osnabrück, Kaiserslautern, Hannover and Karlsruhe.
That approach will be tested in Munich. Magdeburg have conceded 12 goals in nine league games, and when they’ve been opened up, as against Braunschweig, they haven’t been able to stop the damage.
There’s an odd subplot in midfield. Felipe Chávez is on loan from Bayern and is expected to start against his parent club, alongside Hyryläinen in a side likely to line up with three at the back. Musonda is out with an Achilles injury and Kwarteng is a doubt.
Sander, 65, took over during last season and kept the club up. Magdeburg won 4-0 at Bahlinger SC in the first round, and they’ll come to Munich with the same attacking shape that’s taken them up to fifth.
Probable lineup Bayern Munich: Urbig; Stanišić, Upamecano, Tah, Brown; Laimer, Bischof; Karl, Olise, Gnabry; Kane
Probable lineup Magdeburg: Reimann; Nadjombe, T. Müller, García MacNulty; Nollenberger, Hyryläinen, Chávez, Müsel; Iyoha, Żukowski, Atik
Free Football Prediction: Bayern Munich vs Magdeburg
Our prediction: Bayern Munich over 3.5 goals @ 1.70
I’m backing Bayern to score at least four. They’ve beaten Union 7-0 and Leipzig 6-1 at the Allianz Arena this season, and both of those opponents play a division above Magdeburg.
The case against is rotation and the disruption around Kompany. Díaz, Kimmich and possibly Musiala won’t play, and Kane could start on the bench. But Olise, Gnabry and Karl are all likely to be on the pitch, and Magdeburg’s open style gives Bayern the space they need.
A second-division side that conceded six at home in August won’t shut out this attack for 90 minutes. Bayern over 3.5 team goals at 1.70 is the pick.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes
A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
