Bayer Leverkusen vs Freiburg: the league leaders face their biggest test yet
Freiburg are top of the Bundesliga. Not after one lucky weekend, but after five matchdays of four wins and a draw, 14 goals scored and the best defensive record in the division. Sunday’s trip to the BayArena (kick-off 15:30 Paris time) is where we find out how real that is.
Julian Schuster’s side haven’t lost a competitive game since last season’s Europa League final. They’ve won all but one of their nine matches this term, and they’re chasing a tenth straight game without defeat. Not bad for a club most pundits had pencilled into mid-table before a ball was kicked.
Leverkusen are three points behind them in fourth. Carles Martinez Novell, the 42-year-old who replaced Kasper Hjulmand in June, lost his first league game 3-2 at Elversberg. Since then, his side have gone unbeaten and won five of six across all competitions.
They’re arriving in form, too. A chaotic 4-3 win at Mainz was followed by a 4-0 demolition of Lech Poznan in the Europa League on Thursday. Another win here would make it five on the bounce.
Both sides played in Europe on Thursday, so neither has an edge on rest. Freiburg needed a 3-2 win over Jablonec in the Conference League to keep their run going, which says something about how they’re winning games: not always cleanly, but nearly always.
Both teams score freely and neither is airtight. Picking a winner here feels like a coin toss. Goals look more reliable than a correct scoreline call.
Bayer Leverkusen: three clean sheets in four, but the injury list keeps growing
Four wins in a row. Three clean sheets in the last four. Leverkusen’s defence has tightened up considerably since that opening-day loss, and the 2-0 home win over RB Leipzig showed they can shut out a top attack at the BayArena.
The goals keep coming as well. They put four past Union Berlin, four past Mainz and four past Lech Poznan. When this side gets going in the final third, it’s hard to stop.
The trouble is the treatment room. Guela Doue is out with a calf injury, and Montrell Culbreath is a doubt after only just returning to team training. That should push Jarell Quansah to right-back in a four with Edmond Tapsoba, Facundo Medina and Miguel Gutierrez.
Further forward, Martin Terrier picked up a hamstring injury against Lech Poznan, Eliesse Ben Seghir has a muscle problem and Christian Kofane is out with a thigh injury. That’s a lot of attacking options gone in one week. Ibrahim Maza should step into the number 10 role, with Moussa Diaby and Afonso Moreira supporting Patrik Schick.
Teenage midfielder Kennet Eichhorn won’t play again until 2027 as he goes through a gradual conditioning programme. Aleix Garcia and Robert Andrich look set to form the double pivot.
Even with those absences, there’s plenty of quality left. The question is whether the remaining attackers can keep the same tempo against a side as organised as Freiburg.

Freiburg: scoring in every game this season, but only one clean sheet in five
Here’s the thing about Freiburg: they’ve scored in every single match this season. Only RB Leipzig (15) and Bayern Munich (16) have more league goals than their 14.
The league wins have been convincing. A 4-1 over Werder Bremen, a 5-0 thrashing of Borussia Monchengladbach, 1-0 at Paderborn and a 2-1 win over Schalke. The only dropped points came in a 2-2 draw at Eintracht Frankfurt.
But look a little closer and there’s a crack. Freiburg have kept just one clean sheet in their last five games across all competitions, conceding twice in three of them. Bremen, Frankfurt and Jablonec all found a way through. That’s worth noting against a Leverkusen side that scores in bunches at home.
They’ll also be without Yuito Suzuki, who’s suspended after his red card against Schalke, and Muslija remains out with a knee injury. Lucas Holer, Jan-Niklas Beste and Derry Scherhant should start behind Igor Matanovic.
Left-back Berkay Yilmaz is a doubt after missing several training days this week, which would mean Jordy Makengo steps in. It’s not a huge downgrade, but it’s another change to a back line that’s already been leaking a little lately.
Freiburg can hurt anyone. They don’t need many chances — Leverkusen’s defenders will know that.
Probable lineup Bayer Leverkusen: Flekken; Quansah, Tapsoba, Medina, Gutierrez; Garcia, Andrich; Diaby, Maza, Moreira; Schick
Probable lineup Freiburg: Backhaus; Treu, Lienhart, Ginter, Makengo; Engelhardt, Eggestein; Beste, Holer, Scherhant; Matanovic

Our prediction: Both teams to score
Freiburg have scored in every game this season, and Leverkusen have hit four goals in three of their last five. Both attacks are firing, and neither side has a reason to sit back on Sunday.
The defensive numbers back it up. Freiburg have conceded in four of their last five, and Leverkusen are missing Doue with Culbreath a doubt at the back. Both squads are short of options in attack too — but both still have enough to get through.
Freiburg have scored in every game; Leverkusen have hit four goals in three of their last five. Neither side has a reason to sit back. Goals at both ends is the call.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses, that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
