AS Rome vs Fiorentina: three defeats in 52 home meetings, the stat that frames the fixture 
AS Rome have lost just three of their last 52 league home games against Fiorentina. The Viola’s last win in this fixture came back in 2018.
Since then, the Tuscan side have taken six defeats and picked up only two points at the Stadio Olimpico. That is the backdrop for the opening weekend of Serie A 2026-27, on Monday 24 August at 20:45 CEST.
The two clubs, though, are coming off seasons that could hardly have looked more different. Roma finished third and got back into the Champions League after an eight-year absence, while Fiorentina were scrapping right up to the final two matchdays to secure survival.
Gian Piero Gasperini remains in charge in Rome after a strong first year. At the other end, Fabio Grosso replaced Paolo Vanoli on the Fiorentina bench this summer.
The contrast is clear in the squads too. Roma are set to start Monday with most of last season’s regulars, while the Viola are expected to field around seven different names in their starting XI.
One final number underlines the balance of power: Roma have lost only one of their last 14 Serie A opening games. They have already beaten Fiorentina on the opening day, in 2014 and again in 2021.
Roma lean on a season finished at full tilt 
Five wins in a row to close the campaign, at least two goals scored in each one, and just two conceded across the whole run. That was the finish that carried Roma past AC Milan and Juventus.
The final-day win over Hellas Verona sealed the club’s return to the Champions League. Gasperini built that surge on an unusually solid defensive base.
Only Inter Milan and Como kept more clean sheets in Serie A last season. At home, only Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain were better across Europe’s top five leagues.
Their record at the Olimpico follows the same pattern: 13 wins and three defeats, including a 4-0 hammering of Fiorentina there in May. That’s Roma’s best card heading into Monday.
Pre-season, though, was a messier story. A 3-3 draw with Cannes after leading comfortably, a 4-1 defeat to Cardiff City, a 3-0 loss at Brighton and a 2-2 draw with Borussia Dortmund to finish.
Up front, Donyell Malen and Paulo Dybala remain the main men, but Santiago Castro, signed from Bologna this summer, is pushing hard for a start. Wesley, who is carrying an ankle issue, and Lorenzo Pellegrini, short of sharpness, are the only doubts.

Grosso’s Fiorentina arrive with a fresh look 
Nobody in Florence expected to be talking about survival when August rolled around last year. The original European target turned into a relegation scrap, and Fiorentina only secured safety with two games to spare.
Vanoli steadied the ship in dramatic fashion, with the seventh-best Serie A record in the second half of the season. He leaves Grosso a side that lost only once in its last 11 league matches.
That turnaround was built at the back: five clean sheets in the final eight league games. That is the foundation the former Sassuolo boss can work with.
Fiorentina’s summer has been busy, with Arthur Atta, Christ Oulai, Mateo Pellegrino and Franco Mastantuono all arriving, the latter on loan from Real Madrid in early August 2026. Fabiano Parisi, out for a long spell, and Rolando Mandragora, who has a back problem, will miss the trip.
Pre-season went pretty much as planned: two draws against Real Madrid and Deportivo La Coruna, then a 4-1 win over Benevento in the Coppa Italia. Moise Kean got off the mark there.
The Italy striker is the real unknown on the night. Fiorentina’s top scorer in each of the last two seasons, he has scored four league goals against Roma, but none at the Olimpico in 10 attempts.

Fiorentina, meanwhile, are going into the opener with as many as seven potential new starters and without Mandragora, while Roma keep the core of their side intact. Kean, too, has yet to score at the Olimpico after 10 visits.
