Angers vs Rennes: a trip the Bretons have owned for years 
A clash of opposites on Sunday at 17h15 in round 3 of Ligue 1. On one side, Angers are staring down the barrel after back-to-back defeats and no goals scored. On the other, Rennes are flying, rattling in goals and looking sharp in the final third.
On paper, the call is obvious: Stade Rennais arrive as clear favourites against an Angers side already under pressure in front of their own fans.
Angers opened the campaign with a home defeat to Lille before bouncing back away to Auxerre. Rennes, meanwhile, have picked up four points from their first two outings, both at Roazhon Park.
SCO finished last season in 13th, with survival the main concern. The new campaign began on a positive note, with the club winning four of their five warm-up games.
Rennes have bigger ambitions after a start to the season built on two near-identical scripts. Les Rouge et Noir led by two goals in both of their first two matches, but did not always manage to hold the line.
The head-to-head record is heavily tilted towards the Breton side. Rennes have 18 wins in this fixture to Angers’ three, with six draws.
The recent trend is even more one-sided than the overall record. Stade Rennais are unbeaten in their last six Ligue 1 meetings with SCO, winning five of them.
The last meeting, in April 2026, ended in a 2-1 Rennes win. The pattern is becoming almost boringly predictable in Ligue 1.
That said, this kind of streak says little about where both teams are right now. It is exactly the gap between history and the present that makes this one interesting.

SCO ended the last campaign 13th in Ligue 1, living with the reality of a relegation scrap. That has not changed this season.
Pre-season was strong enough, though, with four wins from five. It built some belief, only for the opening league games to knock it back.
The first matchday ended in a 0-2 home defeat to Lille. Stéphane Gilli and his squad got their season off to a flat start in front of their own crowd.
The response came the following week at Auxerre. Angers won 1-3 there, turning the screw with a decisive burst in the final 20 minutes.
That ability to strike late is worth noting. SCO showed they can keep their legs when the opposition starts to open up.
Even so, the contrast between the Lille display and the one at Auxerre raises questions about consistency. Right now, Angers are swinging between decent and dangerous with very little middle ground.
Stade Raymond-Kopa has to become a base for a club fighting to stay up. The first home game of the season went badly, which only piles more pressure on Sunday.
The schedule has not been kind either, with Lille and Rennes visiting in back-to-back home matches. Even a point against the Bretons would be a respectable return.

Stade Rennais began the season with two home games against teams from opposite ends of the spectrum. First up was PSG, the reigning French champions. Then came Le Mans, fresh up from the lower division.
Against Paris, les Rouge et Noir raced into a two-goal lead before being caught. The match finished 2-2, which still counts as a decent result against that kind of opposition.
The same script played out a week later against Le Mans. Rennes again broke clear, only to let the promoted side back into it.
They eventually snatched it at the death, winning 3-2 with a stoppage-time goal. The points are in the bag, but the performance leaves a question mark.
It tells us two things about Franck Haise’s side. First, they have serious attacking punch and can go two goals up against anyone.
But it also shows a clear softness when they have to protect a lead. Two games, two times pegged back after going 2-0 up. Not ideal, and no amount of spin changes that.
For this away trip, that trait matters. Angers have already shown at Auxerre that they can punish any drop in focus late on.
Still, Rennes hold a strong psychological edge in this fixture. Five wins in the last six Ligue 1 meetings will be in the back of both dressing rooms’ minds.

Football Prediction Angers vs Rennes
Our prediction: Rennes to win
The first reason is the Bretons’ domination of this fixture over the years. Eighteen wins to three, and most importantly no defeat in the last six Ligue 1 meetings, five of them Rennes wins.
The second is simply the numbers this season. Rennes have four points from two games, against the reigning champions and a promoted side, while Angers have three and already carry a home defeat.
Rennes’ attacking quality is the third pillar behind this call. Going two goals up against PSG and then Le Mans shows they can hurt teams no matter who is in front of them.
The danger is clear enough: Rennes have let two-goal leads slip in back-to-back matches. Angers, who can finish games strongly as they did at Auxerre, have enough to take advantage if the visitors switch off.
Still, that feels like the exception rather than the rule in this matchup, where SCO have not beaten the Bretons for a long time. Rennes to win, priced around 1.86 with the bookmakers, remains the most sensible play.
