Seattle Kraken vs Calgary Flames: round two, and the Flames still cannot score NHL

Two goals in two games. That is Calgary’s entire offensive output so far, and the first of those games was a 6-1 hammering at home by the team it faces again on Sunday.

The Seattle Kraken host the Calgary Flames at Climate Pledge Arena on Sunday 4 October, with puck drop at 8:00 p.m. ET, 5:00 p.m. local time. In Paris, that means 02:00 on Monday 5 October.

The rematch comes just three days after the opener. On Thursday in Calgary, Seattle won 6-1 and handed the Flames the worst home-opening defeat in franchise history.

Both teams played on Saturday. Seattle lost 3-1 in Edmonton, Calgary gave up four third-period goals in a 4-1 defeat in Vancouver after leading for most of the night.

So this is a back-to-back for both sides, with one difference: Seattle opens its home schedule, while Calgary had to pack up after a draining collapse.

The Kraken are priced around 1.70 on the moneyline. For the team that has looked more coherent in both of its games, at home, against an attack that cannot find the net, that is a price we take.

Seattle Kraken Analysis Seattle Kraken

The 3-1 loss in Edmonton looks worse on paper than it was on the ice. Seattle won the second period 11-4 on shots and kept the Oilers’ power play scoreless on three chances.

That is the key point. Even when the finishing disappeared, the Kraken defended well and generated pressure against one of the most dangerous teams in the league.

Vince Dunn was outstanding in the opener against Calgary with three points. Matty Beniers and Kaapo Kakko also contributed, and Jordan Eberle has been driving play from the second line.

The depth is better than last season. Mackie Samoskevich arrived from Florida in June, adding NHL-experienced youth to a center group that already includes Beniers, Shane Wright and Berkly Catton.

In goal, Joey Daccord and Philipp Grubauer share the work, and the starter for this second leg of the back-to-back was not confirmed at the time of writing.

Seattle does not need another six-goal night. It needs to reproduce the forecheck that forced turnovers in Calgary, and against this Flames roster, that looks very achievable.

Calgary Flames Analysis Calgary Flames

Calgary’s problem is not new. The Flames scored 212 goals last season, the fewest in the NHL, and nothing in the first two games suggests the issue has been fixed.

Ryan Strome scored the only goal in the opener against Seattle. In Vancouver, Calgary carried a lead through two periods before conceding four unanswered goals in the third.

Jonathan Huberdeau remains on injured reserve with a hip injury, removing one of the few true offensive creators on the roster. That is a heavy loss for a team already short on finishing.

The summer work focused on the blue line. Simon Nemec and Maxim Tsyplakov arrived from New Jersey in June, and veteran Jake Middleton was added later, but none of those moves solves the scoring problem.

There are bright spots. Zayne Parekh has been running the offense from the back end, with an assist and four shots in his last game, and Dustin Wolf is capable of a far better night than the six-goal opener.

But the back-to-back complicates the goaltending call, and the Flames must find a way through a Seattle forecheck that caused them problems from the very first shift on Thursday.

Probable lineup Seattle Kraken: Daccord or Grubauer (not confirmed); McCann – Beniers – Kakko; McMann – Stephenson – Eberle; Winterton – Catton – Wright; Meyers – Gaudreau – Samoskevich; Dunn – Larsson; Evans – Montour; Lindgren – Fleury.
Probable lineup Calgary Flames: Wolf or Cooley (not confirmed); Gridin – Frost – Coronato; Honzek – Backlund – Farabee; Othmann – Strome – Sharangovich; Tsyplakov – Pospisil – Klapka; Bahl – Whitecloud; Hanley – Nemec; Middleton – Parekh.

Free NHL Prediction: Seattle Kraken vs Calgary Flames

Our prediction: Seattle Kraken to win (moneyline) at around 1.70

This pick does not rely on another 6-1. It relies on a simple gap: Seattle has looked organised in both of its games, Calgary has scored twice in two, and the Flames are missing Huberdeau.

The schedule is neutral on paper, since both teams played on Saturday. In practice, Seattle sleeps at home while Calgary travels after a third-period collapse, and that small edge matters between two tired teams.

Calgary will be more careful with the puck after Thursday, but that caution will also choke an offense already struggling. We back Seattle at around 1.70, in a game that should stay tight, something like 3-2.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses, that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation, that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
