PSV Eindhoven vs Sparta Rotterdam: seventeen meetings, zero wins for the visitors
Sparta Rotterdam have not beaten PSV Eindhoven in 17 meetings, with 15 of those ending in defeat. The last eight have all gone PSV’s way.
That lopsided record hangs over round six of the Eredivisie, set for Sunday 13 September at 20:00 Paris time at the Philips Stadion. It opens the weekend and could shake up the table.
AZ Alkmaar could only take a point from their home game against Willem II on Friday night. PSV, second with 13 points from five matches, would go top on goal difference with a win.
Sparta arrive in 11th with five points and just one win to their name. After six weeks of the season, there are eight points between the sides.
Ending two years without a win against Ajax by going to the Johan Cruijff Arena and winning 3-1, with goals from Pepi, Geertruida and Bajraktarević, was the perfect response. Peter Bosz finally shook off the ghost that had been dogging his side for five games.
But the mood was quickly cooled by Thursday’s Champions League meeting with Shakhtar Donetsk, which ended 1-1. On Sunday at 20:00, PSV must switch focus fast as Sparta Rotterdam come to the Philips Stadion.

One thing still gives Rogier Meijer hope: Sparta have scored at least twice in three of their last four games. That is exactly why this one is harder to read than a simple mismatch on paper.
PSV Eindhoven: four straight wins and an attack in full flow
PSV have won their last four Eredivisie matches after opening with a 2-2 draw against Fortuna Sittard. That run includes a 5-1 against Groningen, a 6-1 at Utrecht and the 3-1 win at Ajax.
Three of those four victories came with three goals or more. The attack has been the real calling card of this side since the restart.
The flip side is there in the scores: PSV have conceded in all four of those wins. They leave space, and opponents keep finding it.
Ricardo Pepi leads the internal scoring chart with three goals. Ruben van Bommel is next with two goals and two assists, and he has had a hand in every one of the last four league games.
Sergino Dest also has two assists, which tells you how much damage this side does from wide areas. They are not built around one man.
The injury list is still long: Alassane Plea, Sam Lammers, Sami Ouaissa, who has a hamstring problem, Mikkel Bro Hansen, Kiliann Sildillia and Jerdy Schouten, out with an ACL injury, are all missing. That leaves Bosz shorter on depth in midfield and up front.
One factor still works in PSV’s favour: their record at home against this opponent. Sparta have not won at the Philips Stadion since December 1995.

Sparta Rotterdam: goals at one end, holes at the other
Sparta have collected five points from five matches, with one win, two draws and two defeats. Their only victory came in round two, a 3-1 success at Telstar.
What the record hides is the attacking output: at least two goals in three of their last four matches. The 3-3 draw with FC Utrecht and the 3-1 win at Telstar stand out most.
The trouble is at the back. Sparta have shipped three against Utrecht, two at Excelsior and two more against PEC Zwolle, in last week’s 2-2 draw.
Milan Zonneveld has almost carried the attack on his own. The striker has scored in three straight appearances and set up a goal against PEC Zwolle.
Shunsuke Mito has two assists since the restart, and Mitchel van Bergen adds pace and threat out wide. Those three are Sparta’s best route to causing problems at the Philips Stadion.
Rogier Meijer has almost a full squad to choose from, with only Robin van Cruijsen a doubt before the trip. That is a relative bonus against a PSV side missing six players.
History still screams PSV: Sparta’s last league win over them came in November 2001, their last victory in any competition came in the Dutch Cup in October 2016. Their last positive result was a 0-0 draw in January 2023.

PSV have conceded in all four of their Eredivisie wins, while scoring three or more in three of them. This kind of open game keeps showing up too often to be written off as a fluke.
At the other end, Sparta have scored in four of their five league games and just put two past PEC Zwolle. Zonneveld, decisive in his last three outings, gives the visitors a believable platform to avoid leaving empty-handed.
The individual quality is on another level in Eindhoven, and Sparta have not won here for 30 years. Back PSV to win with goals at both ends.
