Galatasaray vs Kocaelispor: three cracks at it, three failures for the leaders against this lot
Galatasaray have not beaten Kocaelispor in their last three meetings, including both league clashes last season. That changes the mood around a fixture that once looked one-sided on paper.
Matchday five in the Super Lig sends last season’s promoted side to Rams Park on Sunday, September 13 at 19:00 Paris time. Both clubs are sitting near the top.
Galatasaray lead the table by a point after four rounds. Kocaelispor are fourth on nine points, two behind the leaders.
The midweek backdrop matters for the home side: on Wednesday, Galatasaray went down 3-1 in Lisbon to Sporting in their Champions League opener. The Istanbul club are now five games without a win in the competition.
The story of that night in Portugal is worth repeating. Galatasaray had more than 60% of the ball and went ahead through a Goncalo Inacio own goal, only to fold to strikes from Geny Catamo, Luis Javier Suarez and Rodrigo Zalazar. All that control counted for nothing.
In the league, though, the form line runs the other way. After a 2-2 draw with promoted Corum Belediyespor on August 14, Okan Buruk’s men have rattled off three straight wins.
Kocaelispor have followed exactly the same pattern: a shaky start, then three victories on the bounce. Selcuk Inan has turned things around in three weeks, and his side arrive in Istanbul with two clean sheets in that run.
Galatasaray: an attack that never stops, a defence that leaks
Galatasaray have scored at least twice in each of their four Super Lig matches. The breakdown is 2, 4, 3 and 3, for a total of 12 goals.
The 0-4 win at Erzurumspor was the cleanest display in that stretch. Then came a 3-2 win over Goztepe and a 2-3 escape at Basaksehir last Friday.
The flip side is obvious: Galatasaray have conceded two goals in three of those four games. The defensive balance is not matching the output at the other end.
At home, the picture is different again. Galatasaray have gone more than two years unbeaten in Super Lig action at Rams Park, with their last home league defeat a 0-1 loss to Fenerbahce in May 2024.
They will, however, be without Victor Osimhen, who is out with a broken arm. The club are aiming to have him back for the derby against Fenerbahce later this month.
Three more absences swell the list: Mario Lemina, who went off with a muscle injury against Basaksehir, Wilfried Singo, sidelined with a thigh problem after the Goztepe game and set to miss a third straight match, and goalkeeper Gunay Guvenc, who is also struggling with a muscle issue.
None of that knocks the league pecking order off course. It just means Buruk has to find the goals somewhere other than his main man.

Kocaelispor: three wins, five goals and two clean sheets
Kocaelispor started the season with a 0-2 defeat to Basaksehir, then hit back with three wins in a row. Amed were beaten 2-0, Konyaspor 1-2 away, and Samsunspor 1-0 last Sunday.
The numbers from that run tell the story: five goals scored, two games without conceding. Efficient, rather than explosive.
The win over Samsunspor summed them up nicely. Kocaelispor made their move with a single goal in the 26th minute against a side that wasted its chances.
The scorer was Florian Aye. The French striker, signed from Servette in the 2026 summer window, was making only his second appearance in his new colours.
The club are coming off a return season in the top flight that ended with a 10th-place finish, 16 years after their 2009 relegation. That position was built on a strong first half of the campaign, because the final nine league matches all came and went without a win.
Two long-term absentees remain on the visitors’ side. Goalkeeper Aleksandar Jovanovic has been out since January with a serious knee injury, while striker Bruno Petkovic has been sidelined since April with a hamstring problem picked up, of all places, against Galatasaray.
So Kocaelispor arrive with a weakened forward line, but with more confidence than they have had at this stage of a season in years. Rams Park is a different test from the three they have just passed.

Galatasaray have scored two goals or more in all four league games this season. Twelve goals in four matches point to a consistency that Osimhen’s absence has not yet dented.
Rams Park strengthens the case: no Super Lig home defeat since May 2024. Kocaelispor arrive with two recent clean sheets, but those came against Amed and Samsunspor, not the league leaders.
Wednesday’s European defeat should spark an immediate attacking response in front of their own fans. The call here is for at least two Istanbul goals.
