RC Vannes vs Montpellier Herault Rugby: both are still on zero, with a first win up for grabs
Vannes and Montpellier sit 13th and 12th in the Top 14 after one round. Neither side has put a single point on the board.
The game is on Saturday 12 September at 16:35, in the afternoon multiplex. Canal+ and Canal+ Live are showing the match.
RC Vannes are getting their first taste of the top flight after promotion and lost 29-20 at Castres in their opener. The Breton newcomers hung in there for a half before the pressure told.
Montpellier went down 27-19 at home to Section Paloise, on a pitch in awful condition. It means the Herault club have now started three straight seasons with a defeat.
So both clubs need a result, but the pressure is not quite the same. Montpellier are coming off a benchmark season, while Vannes are still learning the pace of the league.
That gap in experience makes this an interesting one: the promoted side are at home with nothing to lose, while the supposed favourites are already under the pump. That is often when shocks happen.
RC Vannes held firm for a half at Castres
Vannes lost 29-20 at Stade Pierre-Fabre on opening day. The promoted side did not even manage a losing bonus point.
The Breton club stayed in touch until half-time, going in 17-6 down. Lafage had answered with two penalties, on 26 minutes and then 40+1.
The turning point came when Medrano saw yellow on 31 minutes, and Castres immediately punished them with a penalty try. Sloppiness cost Vannes seven points in one hit.
The second half turned into a procession for Castres, who added three more tries before Vannes finally responded. Stevenson on 64 minutes and Sanerivi on 70 at least put some respectability on the scoreboard.
Lafage converted both tries, which gives the club a reliable kicker for tight games. That matters, and it could matter a lot over the coming months.
Now Vannes get their first home match of the season in the top flight. The setting, and the crowd behind them, changes the picture completely compared with Castres.
Try it for $0.99.
Montpellier Herault Rugby have messed up their start again
Montpellier lost 27-19 to Section Paloise in their opener. That leaves them stuck on zero points.
Pau were 0-10 up by the 36th minute on a Montpellier pitch that had been churned into a mess. The MHR had been chasing the game for ages.
They did respond, with a driving-maul try from hooker Lyam Akrab, who was the top scorer for France U20s when he played for the Bleuets in 2025. The youngster was one of the few bright spots from the weekend.
But indiscipline wrecked the contest, with two yellow cards picked up before the break. Hard to build anything when you are making life that difficult for yourselves.
Joan Caudullo had warned before the season started about the risk of a drop-off after a landmark campaign. The first match backed him up.
12th in the table, Montpellier now head to the promoted side needing four points. A second slip would leave them in a very awkward spot.

Rugby prediction RC Vannes vs Montpellier Herault Rugby
Our prediction: Montpellier Herault Rugby to win
Montpellier lost to a Section Paloise side who finished third in the table after one round, while also taking two yellow cards in the first half. Vannes, meanwhile, were beaten by Castres and never led.
The level of opposition is not the same as the one they face on Saturday, and MHR still have a much deeper squad than the Breton newcomers. A club coming off a benchmark season cannot afford to miss two opening games in a row.
Montpellier win at Vannes and finally get their campaign moving. The bet is on the Herault club to take it.
in your pocket.

First, a word on our free predictions
- What we publish on mathodds is analysis, nothing more. We share an opinion, a current read, but never a guarantee. Sport is what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a goal from nowhere… and the whole story changes.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when something looks obvious, it never really is. And yes, that means you can lose. In fact, you will at some point.
- The best approach is to stay sensible. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never touch money you need for day-to-day life. And above all: do not chase losses, because that usually ends badly.
- A bet should stay a bit of fun, not a job and not a source of income. If it starts to take over your day, winds you up or puts you under pressure, take a break. And if needed, speak to a specialist organisation. That is what they are there for.
- In the end, the responsibility is yours. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, even with the best analysis in the world.
- Essential reminder: betting is illegal for minors and must follow the law in your country. Gambling can spiral fast (money losses, family tension, addiction). Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.
No commitment from us
Our predictions are not a contract. They have no legal force. In plain English: you cannot use them to claim anything if a bet loses.
Information can change
A prediction is always based on what we know when it is written. But in the meantime, a team sheet changes (like RC Vannes, for example), a player gets hurt, the weather turns… and the analysis can quickly go stale. We cannot be held responsible for that.
Your responsibility
Before betting, make sure wagering is legal where you are. If it is not, that is your responsibility, not ours.
Responsible gambling first
