Hull City have six points from two games and have not conceded a single goal. Aston Villa have the exact opposite record: zero points, zero goals scored and five shipped.

The opening game set the tone with a 2-0 win over Manchester United at the MKM Stadium in front of 24,470 spectators. Semi Ajayi struck in the 17th minute, and Mendy doubled the lead on 38.
Two defenders decided the game on opening day. Mendy, signed in the 2026 summer window for the biggest fee in the club’s history, justified the outlay at the first time of asking.
The second game underlined what this side is about: a 1-0 win at Coventry sealed by a late Liam Millar goal in the 82nd minute. Three goals in two matches, none conceded, and it all starts with discipline.
There is a simple upside to that kind of return: Hull have not once had to chase a game this season. For a promoted club, that is a rare luxury, and it changes everything about how you approach a struggling opponent.
The injury list is still a mess, though, with Gelhardt, Butland, Hughes, Gyabi, Jacob, Matazo and Zambrano all out. Jakirovic has seven players missing from his squad.
Beating Manchester United came in front of 24,470 fans, compared with 74,148 at Old Trafford a week later. The gap in resources makes the result look even stronger.
Hull’s three goals this season have been scored by three different players: Ajayi, Mendy and Millar. There is no reliance on one centre-forward, which helps when injuries hit up front.
To keep producing like this despite that absentee list says plenty about the balance they have found. The issue now is whether that shape can stand up to a side coming in desperate for a response.

Aston Villa: two games, five conceded, none scored 
Aston Villa still have not scored in the Premier League this season. The Birmingham club share that unwanted stat with Tottenham and Coventry, which is not exactly the company they were after.
The opening trip to the Amex Stadium turned into a disaster, with a 4-0 defeat to Brighton in front of 31,746 fans. An own goal from Victor Lindelof in the 8th minute started the slide.
Maxime De Cuyper made it worse in the 18th, then Jack Hinshelwood added two more in the 30th and 31st minutes. Four goals down before the half-hour mark is not a bad day; it’s a collapse.
The second game was at least more disciplined defensively, ending in a 1-0 home defeat to Arsenal. The problem just moved further up the pitch: Villa dug in, but offered nothing going forward.
After two matches, their goal difference stands at minus five, the worst in the division alongside Crystal Palace. No attacker has opened his account yet.
There is no time to feel sorry for themselves, with this trip to Hull offering a chance to kick-start the season before the break. A third straight defeat would leave them in the red for a while yet.
The only real encouragement came from the Arsenal game, which Villa lost 1-0. They kept the damage down against the team sitting second in the table, a sharp contrast to the 4-0 battering at Brighton.
The problem is twofold: they need to find a goal threat, and they have to do it against the only other defence in the division still without a blemish, alongside Arsenal. Not ideal.
