Auxerre vs Angers: two clubs on zero points and two coaches who arrived in June
A bottom-of-the-table scrap already under pressure, with Auxerre (17th) and Angers (16th) meeting on Saturday 29 August at 20:45 at the Stade de l’Abbe-Deschamps.
Both sides made a complete mess of their opening weekend and lost straight away.
This second-round clash also brings together two newly appointed managers. On the Burgundy side, Will Still took charge on 12 June 2026, three weeks after Christophe Pelissier was sacked.
Stphane Gilli took over at Angers on 9 June 2026, soon after Alexandre Dujeux left to coach Lorient. So both bosses are only on their second competitive league match.
The early signs are clearly different. Auxerre conceded five at Lens while scoring two, while Angers lost 0-2 at home to Lille without managing a single shot on target.
In terms of goal difference, AJA sit on -3 and SCO on -2. Those numbers dump both sides into the danger zone after just one weekend.
That is what makes this one easy to read: whoever gets off the mark first will grab a real psychological edge in a season that has already started badly.
Auxerre: five goals shipped at Lens, but the attack did show up
AJ Auxerre lost 5-2 at Bollaert-Delelis on Saturday 22 August. Florian Thauvin opened the scoring from the spot on 12 minutes and then wrapped up the evening with another penalty on 88 minutes.
In between, Ivanovic on 49 minutes, Saud Abdulhamid on 54 and Ganiou on 66 stretched the lead. Auxerre’s defence fell apart five times in one match.
But the attacking return deserves its own mention. Loader pulled one back from the spot on 61 minutes, and Sy added a second on 69.
Two goals away from home against the team that produced the best attack of the round is no small thing. AJA never folded.
The issue is at the back, where they could not survive the 20 minutes after half-time. Three goals conceded between 49 and 66 minutes point to a clear collective collapse.
Will Still therefore has a very obvious job in his second game: stitch together a unit that split open at the first real burst from the opposition.
At the Abbe-Deschamps, against a side that is still yet to score, that weakness is less punishing than it was at Lens. Auxerre can push higher up the pitch without leaving quite as much space behind.
That is the home edge here: they are the only one of the two to have scored this season, and they are doing it in front of their own fans.
Try it for $0.99.
Angers: no goals, and a game done and dusted in 30 minutes
SCO lost 0-2 at home to Lille on Sunday 23 August. The contest was effectively over before the half-hour mark.
Olivier Giroud struck on 11 minutes, finishing off a Nabil Bentaleb assist after Lille won the ball high up the pitch. Anthony Lopes had no answer to the low drive from outside the box.
Tiago Santos doubled the lead on 31 minutes. Angers then spent the next hour chasing shadows without ever really threatening a comeback.
Two goals conceded is manageable. No goals scored in 90 minutes is the real warning sign for Stphane Gilli.
SCO were punished after coughing it up high, which raises questions about how they build from the back. Against a pressing side, Angers ran out of ideas far too early.
Going to Auxerre should, in theory, offer a better setup than hosting Lille. AJA were cut open for five at Lens and leave gaps behind midfield.
But SCO have not shown they can exploit those spaces yet. First, they need to prove they can score in Ligue 1 this season.
That is the key issue for Angers: without a first goal, Gilli’s side are staring at another blank weekend.

Ligue 1 prediction Auxerre vs Angers
Our pick: Auxerre to win
Auxerre scored twice at Bollaert against the team that hit five this weekend, so the attack is there. Angers did not score at all on matchday one.
SCO were also caught cold by Lille’s press on 11 minutes, a weakness Will Still’s side can exploit at home. AJA should need less possession to create chances than they did up north.
The five goals shipped at Lens should not hide the main point: Auxerre are at home against a team that still have not found the net. Back Auxerre to get it done.
in your pocket.

First, a word on our free picks
- What we publish on mathodds is analysis, nothing more. It is an opinion, a read on the current moment, but never a guarantee. Sport is what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a goal out of nowhere… and the script changes completely.
- Let us be clear: there is no risk-free bet. Even when something looks obvious, it never really is. And yes, that means you can lose. At some point, you will.
- The best approach is to stay sensible. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Do not touch money you need to live. And above all, do not chase losses, because that rarely ends well.
- A bet should stay a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your life, if it is winding you up or putting you under pressure, take a break. And if needed, speak to a specialist organisation. That is what it is there for.
- In the end, responsibility is yours. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, even with the best analysis in the world.

No commitment from us
Our picks are not a contract. They have no legal force. In plain English: you cannot use them to claim anything if a bet does not land.
Information that changes
A prediction always depends on what is known when it is written. But in the meantime, a team sheet can change (like Auxerre’s, for example), a player can get injured, the weather can turn… and the analysis can quickly be out of date. We cannot be held responsible for that.
Your role
Before betting, just check that wagering is legal where you are. If it is not, that is your responsibility, not ours.
