Brest vs Toulouse: one point to none, and two rebuilds still finding their feet 
Brest and Toulouse meet on Saturday 29 August at 20:45 at Stade Francis-Le Blé in Ligue 1 matchday two.
After their opening draw, Brest sit sixth, ahead of a Toulouse side down in 15th after losing their first game.
This one has been shaped by changes in both dugouts this summer, especially in Brest. Julien Lachuer took charge there on 27 June 2026 to keep things steady, 10 days after the tragic death of Eric Roy.
On the Toulouse side, Jens Berthel Askou was confirmed on 21 May 2026 as Carles Martinez Novell’s successor. The Dane is now into his first full season with Les Violets.
Brest opened their campaign with a 2-2 draw at Le Mans, against a promoted side. Toulouse lost 0-2 at home to Lyon.
Those results do not carry the same weight in the table, but they point to the same problem: both defences gave up at least two goals straight away.
The real story here is in attack. Brest scored twice away from home, while Toulouse are still waiting for their first goal.
Brest: two goals scored, two points dropped at Le Mans 
Stade Brestois came away from Le Mans with a point after a 2-2 draw. Del Castillo opened the scoring in the 31st minute.
Then the game turned. Gueye levelled in first-half stoppage time, before Mafouta put Le Mans ahead in the 55th minute.
Doumbia pulled Brest level again in the 62nd minute. So Brest scored twice and shipped twice in the same match.
The positive is their response. Trailing just after the hour mark, Julien Lachuer’s side hit back within seven minutes.
The flaw is just as obvious: conceding two goals in 25 minutes, including one in first-half stoppage time, is the sort of thing that costs points over a full season.
Behind the scenes, the club has also tied down a key midfield figure. Foot Mercato reported on 24 August that Brest were wrapping up Hugo Magnetti’s contract situation.
That matters for a club that lost its long-serving coach in June and still needs a stable core.
At home, against a team yet to score, Brest have their clearest chance of August to kick-start the season.

Toulouse: no goals, and a transfer window that has unsettled the spine 
TFC lost 0-2 at the Stadium to Lyon on Saturday 22 August. Nartey broke the deadlock in the 68th minute, with Malick Fofana adding a second in the 85th.
The painful detail sits in Lyon’s lineup. Paulo Fonseca had named a heavily rotated side, keeping powder dry for their European play-off.
Losing at home to a second-string team, and failing to score, leaves Toulouse 15th with a goal difference of -2.
The transfer market has not helped. Dayann Methalie’s move to Sunderland was put on hold after an issue was spotted in his medical, and the left-back has returned to France for further checks.
Goalkeeper Guillaume Restes is also being chased by Olympique de Marseille, who have reportedly put forward a verbal offer involving a paid loan with an option to buy.
Two additions arrived just before the start of the league season. David Odogu joined on loan from AC Milan on 18 August, and Danish midfielder Thomas Jorgensen arrived from Viborg on 19 August.
Both still need time to settle, which goes some way to explaining the fragility seen against Lyon. Toulouse have also lost Djibril Sidibe, out of contract and now signed for Le Mans.
The danger for Les Violets is clear: go to Francis-Le Ble without a goal to their name, with a side still being reshaped by the window, and a second straight defeat starts to look very real.

Brest scored twice away from home in their first outing, while Toulouse failed to score at home. The gap in attacking output is the clearest factor in this fixture.
TFC also arrive with a centre-back pairing and left side disrupted by the transfer window, between the newly completed loan for David Odogu and the unresolved Methalie situation. Brest, meanwhile, head to Francis-Le Ble with a settled group and a midfield that has been tied down.
