A campaign inspired by a TV show
Apple TV has dropped season 4 of Ted Lasso after a three-year wait. The show returns with a new chapter centred on women’s football.
A Lithuanian club saw an opening. The women’s team at Žalgiris FC in Vilnius have launched a media campaign to try to lure Jason Sudeikis into their dugout.
The aim is clear. Get the actor to take charge of a league match this autumn.
Try it for $0.99.
The heritage pitch
The approach was rolled out in a video posted on the Laisvės TV YouTube channel. The club is banking on Sudeikis’s Lithuanian roots to swing it their way.
Andrius Tapinas, president of Žalgiris FC and founder of Laisvės TV, makes no secret of the plan: “For us, it is about putting the Believe message into practice in the real world. Our players are hungry for that boost and for the fresh outlook Ted Lasso brings.”
What the club really wants
Strip away the PR spin and the maths is pretty simple. “Ultimately, we want to show that in Vilnius, women’s football and humour both belong on the international stage,” Tapinas adds.
Lithuanian women’s football still barely registers beyond its own borders. Hitching itself to a global hit is the quickest way to force people to take notice.
Whether Sudeikis bites is another matter. There is no sign yet that he has responded.
