Argentina vs Austria: first place in the round of 16 on the line
Argentina made its point from the moment the tournament kicked off for them. Against Algeria, the world champions played with authority and cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win, with Lionel Messi again pulling the strings when it mattered. A second straight victory would already put Lionel Scaloni’s side in a very strong position to qualify.
Austria also started well, beating Jordan 3-1, but Ralf Rangnick’s men showed a few cracks at the back. Against one of the most experienced teams in the tournament, this will be a very different test.
A slick Argentina side knows exactly what it is doing
Over the past few months, the Albiceleste have rolled on with impressive consistency. The patterns are drilled, the midfield sets the pace and the back line gives up very little.
Against Algeria, the South Americans never looked rattled. Even at 38, Lionel Messi is still the conductor of this team, but Argentina’s real strength is the group around him. Very few sides can match that level of control right now. Scaloni’s team are also on a serious run and look to have found the same confidence that carried them to the trophy in 2022.
Austria will need to raise its level
The win over Jordan did the job, but it was far from flawless. Austria left too much space at times and had to wait until the final 15 minutes to get the breakthrough. Rangnick’s team has a clear identity and is awkward to play against, but it has not often faced opposition of Argentina’s level in recent months. Its discipline and pressing can disrupt South Americans for spells, but keeping that intensity for 90 minutes is another matter entirely.
Probable lineups:
Argentina: E Martinez; Molina, Romero, Li Martinez, Medina; De Paul, Mac Allister, Fernandez, Almada; Messi, La Martinez
Austria:A Schlager; Laimer, Lienhart, Alaba, Mwene; Seiwald, X Schlager; Schmid, Chukwuemeka, Sabitzer; Kalajdzic

World Cup 2026 prediction: Argentina vs Austria
Argentina to win
Austria have enough about them to make life awkward, but the gap in big-game know-how between these two sides is still significant. Argentina look like a team that knows exactly where it’s heading and have already found their stride in this World Cup.
The Austrians can compete in patches, but over the course of such a demanding game, the technical quality and collective control of the world champions should tell. In a group where every point matters, the Albiceleste look well placed to make it two wins from two and move a step closer to the knockout stage.

First, a word on our predictions
- What we publish on mathodds is analysis, nothing more. We offer an opinion, a read on the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport is what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a goal out of nowhere… and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when something looks obvious, it never truly is. And yes, that means you can lose. It is inevitable at some point.
- The smart move is to stay sensible. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Do not touch money you need to live on. And above all, do not chase losses; it rarely ends well.
- A bet should stay a game, not a job and not a source of income. If it starts to take up too much space in your day, if it winds you up or puts you under pressure, take a break. And if needed, speak to a specialist support service. That’s what it’s there for.
- In the end, the responsibility is yours. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, even with the best analysis in the world.
- Important reminder: betting is forbidden for minors and must follow the law in your country. Gambling can spiral quickly, with money lost, family strain and addiction. Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.
No commitment from us
Our predictions are not a contract. They have no legal force. Put simply: you cannot use them to demand anything if a bet loses.
Information can change
A prediction is always based on what we know at the time it is written. But a team sheet can change, a player can get hurt, the weather can turn… and the analysis can quickly be out of date. We cannot be held responsible for that.
