Cambuur vs PSV Eindhoven: a seven-game unbeaten run against the champions’ 35 league goals Eredivisie

Cambuur were 4-0 up against Go Ahead Eagles when fireworks thrown from the away end stopped the match in the 82nd minute. The KNVB has since confirmed that the remaining minutes won’t be played and that the 4-0 stands, so Ismael Baouf, Jason Ceka, Billy van Duijl and Rafik El Arguioui all keep their goals.

That result came a week after a 6-1 win at Willem II, the first time Cambuur had scored six in a top-flight match. Ten goals in two league games have lifted Johan Plat’s promoted side to ninth on 15 points, and they’re now unbeaten in seven. A point against PSV would make it eight, a club record in the Eredivisie era; the current mark of seven was set between 9 February and 30 March 2014.

PSV come to Leeuwarden as champions and as the side that scored 101 league goals on the way to 84 points last season. Peter Bosz’s team are third this time, on 23 points, two behind leaders Feyenoord, and their last league game was a 7-0 home win over Willem II with seven different scorers.

The week hasn’t been entirely smooth for them, though. Club Brugge won 2-1 at the Philips Stadion on Wednesday night, leaving PSV with four points from four Champions League games, and the winner came from a counter after PSV lost the ball with most of their players upfield.

Kick-off at the Kooi Stadion is on Sunday 8 November at 15:45 UK time. The match odds are lopsided, with PSV at 1.36 and Cambuur at 6.00, so the more useful question here isn’t who wins but how many goals the game produces.

History points the same way. PSV have won nine of the last 11 meetings, including 5-2 in March 2023, and Cambuur’s only win in that stretch was 3-0 on 1 October 2022. Nine of the last ten meetings between the clubs have had more than two goals.

Cambuur: ten goals in two games, but nine conceded at home to Feyenoord and Twente Cambuur

Cambuur went up as Eerste Divisie runners-up behind ADO Den Haag, sealing promotion with a 4-2 win at Emmen on 25 March. Plat took over on 1 July, with Henk de Jong moving into an assistant’s role, and the first month of the season was harsh on both of them.

The opening four league games were all defeats: 4-0 at home to Excelsior, 3-1 at Fortuna Sittard, 5-2 against Feyenoord and 4-1 against Twente. Sixteen goals conceded in four matches, and the last two of those defeats came at the Kooi Stadion.

Since then the side has changed shape and confidence. They drew 2-2 at Telstar, beat NEC 3-0, drew 1-1 at ADO Den Haag, won 1-0 at PEC Zwolle and held AZ to a 2-2 draw with ten men before the two heavy wins. The home numbers still carry the early damage: across six league games in Leeuwarden, Cambuur have scored 12 and conceded 15.

El Arguioui is the man in form. He has six goals and an assist in 11 league games, and he played against Go Ahead with a protective mask after breaking his nose at Willem II. Nicolas Binder has five league goals, and Baouf’s header from a corner opened the scoring in Tilburg.

The one long-term absence is club captain Jamal Amofa, out for the rest of the season after Achilles surgery following the PEC Zwolle game on 11 October. Wout Asselman is still working his way back through the under-21s, but Plat otherwise has an almost fully fit group to choose from.

PSV Eindhoven: 35 scored in 11, and a back line Brugge got behind PSV Eindhoven

PSV’s league record reads seven wins, two draws and two defeats, with 35 goals scored and 13 conceded. The start was slower than the title holders would have liked: a home draw with Fortuna Sittard on the opening weekend, and a first win only in round two, 2-1 at Excelsior.

The 7-0 against Willem II on 31 October showed what this side can do against a defence that gives it space. Mauro Junior opened the scoring after 20 minutes, Guus Til added the second just before half-time, and the rest came from five other players.

The Brugge game showed the other side of that approach. Kodai Sano equalised, but Carlos Forbs ran through for the winner after PSV were caught short at the back, and Filip Kostic had a difficult evening against him on that flank. Bosz said afterwards that his team had created plenty, singled out Sergino Dest as unlucky in front of goal, and warned that Cambuur have developed a taste for winning.

Away from Eindhoven, PSV have won only two of their last five. Paul Wanner, Jerdy Schouten, Adamo Nagalo and Alassane Plea are all long-term absentees, and Wanner isn’t expected back until after the international break.

Ivan Perisic played on with a head bandage after a first-half collision with Freddie Potts on Wednesday, and Bosz said on Friday that he expects the Croatian to be available. Sam Lammers is a doubt, and Sven Mijnans is expected to continue in the forward line with Ruben van Bommel on the left.

Probable lineup Cambuur: Jansen; Costarelli, Van Duijl, Baouf, Bouah; Maertens, Souren; Ceka, El Arguioui, Hamache; Binder
Probable lineup PSV Eindhoven: Kovar; Dest, Geertruida, Obispo, Kostic; Mauro Junior, K. Sano, Til; Perisic, Van Bommel, Mijnans

Free Football Prediction: Cambuur vs PSV Eindhoven

Our prediction: Over 3.5 goals (odds 1.67)

A PSV win at 1.36 is too short to be worth backing, and the evidence for goals is stronger than the evidence for any particular winner. Cambuur’s six home league games have produced 27 goals, and both of the strongest attacks to visit, Feyenoord and Twente, scored at least four.

PSV bring the division’s most productive attack, 35 goals in 11, and a defence that Brugge exposed on the break three days ago. Cambuur play with three forwards behind Binder and have scored ten in their last two league games, so I’d expect them to find the net at least once even if PSV control most of the ball.

The obvious risk is a comfortable 3-0 for the visitors. Nine of the last ten meetings went over 2.5 goals, though, and with two attacks this sharp, four or more is the more likely route.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
