Wigan Athletic vs Mansfield Town: 21st against 12th, and a head-to-head level at two wins each
Wigan and Mansfield have met five times since October 2024, and the record stands at two wins each and a draw. Wigan took the most recent of those, 2-1 at home on 11 April, while Mansfield won 2-1 on the same ground in October 2024.
The sixth meeting is at the Brick Community Stadium on Tuesday 3 November, kick-off 19:45 UK time. This League One fixture was originally set for 3 October and comes three days after both clubs played on Saturday.
The table shows eight points between them. Wigan are 21st with 10 points from 13 games, and Mansfield are 12th with 18 from 12, so the visitors have a game in hand as well as the higher position.
The goal columns separate the sides by more than the points do. Wigan have scored 11 and conceded 22 for a goal difference of minus 11. Mansfield have scored 20 and conceded 18, which puts them on plus two.
Saturday pulled both teams out of their recent pattern. Wigan beat Bromley 3-2 for only their third league win of the season, ending a run of three straight defeats. Mansfield lost 2-0 at home to Notts County, which ended a four-match unbeaten league run.
We’d weigh that single result lightly on both sides. Over the last six league games Wigan have taken six points and Mansfield have taken 11, and Mansfield’s best work in that spell came away from home.
Wigan Athletic: three wins from 13 games, and only 11 goals scored
Gary Caldwell’s side have won three, drawn one and lost nine. In the two league games before Bromley they scored once at Huddersfield and not at all at Leicester.
The October results explain the position. Wigan lost 1-0 at Stevenage, beat Reading 1-0, lost 2-1 at Oxford, lost 2-1 at Huddersfield and lost 3-0 at Leicester before Saturday’s win. That’s one goal or fewer in five straight league games before Bromley.
Three goals against Bromley matched what those five games had produced between them, but the 3-2 scoreline also showed the defensive risk. Wigan have conceded 22 in 13 league games, an average of 1.7 a match.
Christian Saydee remains their top scorer and is still building his minutes after a calf injury. He scored at Oxford, one of only 11 Wigan league goals this season.
Fraser Murray is available again after a three-match suspension that followed his red card at Oxford. That’s a direct gain for midfield, and Akeel Higgins also returned from a hamstring problem during the Leicester game.
The absences are still significant. Luke Harris has been out with a hamstring injury since early September, Sonny Perkins is following concussion protocols after missing Saturday, and Archie Harris is being assessed for a minor hamstring problem. Ryan Trevitt may be available but didn’t feature against Bromley.

Mansfield Town: 7 goals in two recent away wins, then a blank against Notts County
Mansfield won 3-0 at AFC Wimbledon and 4-1 at Blackpool in their last two league away games. Seven goals scored and one conceded on those trips is the main reason we favour them here.
Their five wins from 12 are two more than Wigan have from 13. They’ve also drawn three and lost four, a steady return for a side that sits in mid-table with a positive goal difference.
Michael Smith leads their scoring, and 20 league goals from 12 games is an average of 1.67 a match. Wigan’s average is 0.85.
Saturday’s defeat came against a Notts County side that held them scoreless at home, and they’d also lost 2-0 at Port Vale in another competition during this run. Those two blanks are the concern, and both came in their most recent games.
Injuries are the other issue. David McGoldrick has been out since 19 September with a knee problem and was expected to miss about three more weeks as of 27 October. Akins has a hamstring injury and Liam Thompson a significant calf problem, neither with a firm return date.
Baily Cargill is doubtful with a hamstring problem and George Abbott is uncertain after a knock at Blackpool. That thins the options, but it hasn’t stopped Mansfield collecting points on the road, and they’ve scored in their last three away league games against Wigan.
Probable lineup Wigan Athletic: Whitworth; Barrett, Carragher, Burns, Weir, Miller; Gray, Power, Murray; Burrowes, Saydee

Our prediction: Mansfield Town to win
Mansfield have scored almost twice as many league goals as Wigan from one game fewer, and they’ve won their last two league away games by a combined 7-1. Wigan have conceded at least twice in each of their last four league games and have won two of their last six.
We accept the case against. Wigan beat Mansfield in April, Murray is back, and Mansfield come here with five senior players missing or in doubt. We still hold the pick, because Wigan’s win over Bromley took three goals and still let two in, and nine defeats from 13 games isn’t a record that one result repairs.
We didn’t have a firm bookmaker price at the time of writing, so we’d only take this at 1.45 or longer. A narrow away win is the outcome we expect, with Smith and the Mansfield front line finding enough space against a defence that has conceded 22 times.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
