Porto vs Napoli: nine wins from nine in Portugal, no points in Europe
Porto have won all nine of their Liga Portugal matches, scoring 21 and conceding four, their best start to a league season since 1939/40. In the Champions League they have no points from three games.
They host Napoli at the Estadio do Dragao on Wednesday 4 November, with kick-off at 20:00 UK time.
The European run started with a 2-0 home defeat by Manchester City, in which Haaland scored twice, continued with a 3-2 loss at Real Betis after Porto had led 2-1, and reached three defeats with a 1-0 home loss to PSV on 20 October. That’s four European defeats in a row, equalling a club record, and Porto have conceded first in each of their last four Champions League games.
Napoli have three points. They lost 1-0 to Arsenal and 3-1 at Villarreal on 13 October before beating Bodo/Glimt 4-3 at home on 20 October. They’re winless in their last seven Champions League away games, with one draw and six defeats, and have lost all 14 main-phase away games in which they trailed at half-time.
The history between the clubs is short. Napoli won both legs 1-0 in the 1974/75 UEFA Cup, and Porto went through 3-2 on aggregate in the 2013/14 Europa League round of 16. Porto are also unbeaten in their last six UEFA home games against Italian clubs, with four wins and two draws.
Porto: a domestic run Farioli hasn’t been able to take into Europe
Francesco Farioli has won 50 of his 67 competitive games in charge, and his side lead the league by five points. Porto hosted Estoril on Saturday evening before this game.
The recent wins include a 3-1 over Benfica and a 1-0 at Gil Vicente on 24 October, settled by Borja Sainz. A heavily rotated side then beat Academico de Viseu 1-0 in the Taca da Liga quarter-final on 28 October through a Gimenez penalty.
In Europe the goals have dried up. Porto have scored two goals in three Champions League games, one each from Veiga and Samu, with Pepe providing an assist, and their last 11 home games at this stage of the competition have produced no draws.
William Gomes is out with an ankle injury and Vasco Sousa has a broken fibula. Pietuszewski is a doubt with a thigh problem, while Smalling, Gabriel Mec and Prpic aren’t registered in the Champions League squad.
Porto have gone six games without a win against Serie A clubs, home and away combined. At the Dragao, though, their last six UEFA games against Italian visitors brought four wins and two draws.

Napoli: conceding in five straight games, with Lobotka a doubt
Massimiliano Allegri’s side have 14 points in Serie A, level with eighth-placed Juventus and 11 off the top. They travel to Turin on Sunday before flying to Porto.
Their October was erratic. A 3-0 win over Frosinone on 10 October was followed by the 3-1 defeat at Villarreal, a 1-0 loss to Venezia in which Kevin De Bruyne had a penalty saved, the 4-3 win over Bodo/Glimt, and a 3-3 draw with Roma on 24 October in which Scott McTominay scored twice.
Napoli then beat Monza 4-1 on 28 October, with goals from Rasmus Hojlund, Matteo Politano, Marin and De Bruyne off the bench. They’ve conceded in each of their last five games.
Stanislav Lobotka went off with an ankle injury after 17 minutes against Monza, and Neres, Badiashile and Alisson Santos are also out. Allegri was sent off against Roma and is serving a two-match Serie A ban, which doesn’t stop him being on the bench in Portugal.
McTominay is Napoli’s top Champions League scorer this season with two goals, and Politano has a goal and an assist. Napoli have won five of their six matches against Portuguese clubs.
Probable lineup Porto: D. Costa; A. Costa, Bednarek, Kiwior, Sanusi; Froholdt, Rosario, Veiga; Sainz, Samu, Pepe
Probable lineup Napoli: Milinkovic-Savic; Di Lorenzo, Rrahmani, Marin, Olivera; Anguissa, Gilmour, McTominay; Politano, Hojlund, Lang
Free Champions League Prediction: Porto vs Napoli
Our prediction: Porto to win (odds around 2.15)
We’re siding with Porto. Nine straight league wins and four goals conceded in nine games describe a side in better shape than its European points suggest, and the three defeats came against City, Betis and PSV.
Porto’s habit of conceding first in Europe is the obvious worry, and Napoli have the attacking players to punish it. But Allegri’s side haven’t won any of their last seven Champions League away games, have conceded in five straight matches, may be without Lobotka, and play Juventus away three days before this trip.
Porto to win is priced between 2.15 and 2.25, and the home side’s record against Italian visitors, unbeaten in six, backs it up.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes
A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
