Milwaukee Bucks vs Houston Rockets: the West’s last unbeaten team visits a defense that gave up 127 three times NBA

Milwaukee allowed 128, 132 and 127 points in its first three games of the season and lost all of them. The Bucks finally won on Monday, 110-102 against Indiana, which spared them a first 0-4 start since 1976-77. On Wednesday at Fiserv Forum, tip-off 8:00pm ET, the opponent is a Houston team that hasn’t lost yet.

The Rockets are 4-0 and sit first in the Western Conference. They beat Dallas 128-110 on opening night, won 114-110 against San Antonio in Austin, then beat Atlanta twice in three days, 121-114 on the road and 120-110 at Toyota Center on Monday. Ime Udoka’s team has outscored opponents by close to ten points a night.

This is a very different Milwaukee from the one Houston beat twice last season. Giannis Antetokounmpo was traded to Miami in June along with Bobby Portis, and the Bucks got Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kasparas Jakucionis back. Taylor Jenkins replaced Doc Rivers on the bench in April.

The result has been an offense that can score and a defense that can’t stop much. Milwaukee is averaging 116.8 points and allowing 122.3 through four games. Houston, on the other hand, is giving up 111.0, and it has the size to punish a team that struggles on the glass.

Both teams last played on Monday, so neither is on a back-to-back. That takes away one of the usual excuses for an upset and leaves the matchup to decide the game, and on that front I think Houston holds most of the cards.

Milwaukee Bucks: Herro carries the offense, but the bench lineups bleed points Milwaukee Bucks

Tyler Herro has been everything Milwaukee hoped for at the offensive end. He scored 24 in Washington, 34 against Chicago and 23 against Indiana, where he also had 10 rebounds and seven assists on 7-of-14 shooting. He has the highest usage rate on the team and was shooting 41.7% from three before Monday.

The problem for Jenkins is what happens when the starters sit. Milwaukee’s starting five has a net rating of +18.2 so far, while lineups that include a reserve are at -19.5. That gap explains how a team shooting 48.9% from the field over its first two games still lost them by 12 and seven points.

Monday’s win showed the better version, and it came after the break. The Bucks trailed Indiana by 11 at halftime and won the second half 60-41. Ryan Rollins scored 19, Kyle Kuzma hit a late three on his way to 17, and Kel’el Ware had 16 points and 14 rebounds off the bench for his second straight double-double.

Myles Turner’s numbers on Monday show where the defense can work. He scored only six points but blocked four shots, grabbed nine rebounds and finished a team-best +14. Against Houston’s front line, Milwaukee needs Turner and Ware on the floor together for long stretches, and that leaves very little shooting around Herro.

There’s also the home crowd, or the lack of one. Fiserv Forum was less than a third full on Monday because the Brewers were hosting Game 3 of the World Series across town. Milwaukee’s game against Chicago on Friday was moved four hours earlier for the same reason, and the Bucks lost that one 132-125.

Houston Rockets: 4-0, a 52-35 edge on the boards on Monday, and Sengun at his best Houston Rockets

Alperen Sengun has been Houston’s best player through four games. He had 23 points and 10 rebounds against Dallas, 29 points and seven blocks against San Antonio, and 29 points, nine rebounds and nine assists on 11-of-15 shooting against Atlanta on Monday. That’s a center running the offense from the elbow and protecting the rim at the other end.

Kevin Durant scored 30 on opening night, 20 in Austin and 22 on Monday. Against the Hawks he also had nine rebounds and four blocks in 30 minutes and went 9 of 10 from the free-throw line. Jabari Smith Jr. scored 30 on opening night and followed it with 16 points and 12 rebounds on Monday.

Houston wins games on the glass. The Rockets outrebounded Atlanta 52-35 on Monday and blocked nine shots, and they led the league in offensive rebounds last season. Amen Thompson had 20 points and 10 rebounds in Austin and blocked Victor Wembanyama’s tying attempt in the final second.

The weak spot is ball security. Houston turned it over 22 times on Monday and still won by 10, largely because it shot 53.1% from the field. The Rockets also went 8 of 27 from three in that game, so this isn’t a team that beats opponents from outside.

Availability is mostly settled. Steven Adams is out with a leg strain for at least another week, and Marcus Smart missed Monday with a forearm injury, although Udoka said he could return in the next game. Fred VanVleet, back from a torn ACL, sat on Monday with knee management, but Houston has rested him on back-to-backs and this isn’t one.

Probable lineup Milwaukee Bucks: Kasparas Jakucionis or Ryan Rollins, Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kyle Kuzma, Myles Turner (not officially confirmed)
Probable lineup Houston Rockets: Fred VanVleet (or Marcus Smart), Amen Thompson, Kevin Durant, Jabari Smith Jr., Alperen Sengun. Steven Adams is out.

Our prediction: Houston Rockets on the handicap

Sportsbooks hadn’t posted a spread or total when this was written, so the exact number is still to come. My pick is Houston to win and cover, and I’d want the line no bigger than seven points. A straight win on Houston is likely to be priced too short, while the handicap reflects how far apart these teams are.

The matchup is where the gap shows. Houston outrebounded Atlanta by 17 on Monday and blocked nine shots, and Milwaukee’s bench units are -19.5 per 100 possessions. Every minute Herro sits, the Bucks are putting a weaker lineup up against Sengun, Durant and Smith, and the Rockets won both meetings last season, 122-115 in Milwaukee and 119-113 in Houston.

The risk is Houston’s carelessness. Twenty-two turnovers would let a Milwaukee team that shoots well back into the game, and the Bucks did come from 11 down to beat Indiana. Still, Indiana isn’t Houston, and Milwaukee gave up 127 or more in each of its three losses. I expect the Rockets to move to 5-0 by double figures.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.
