Detroit Pistons vs Charlotte Hornets: a back-to-back without Duren, against Brandon Miller’s 73 points in two nights NBA

Brandon Miller has scored 73 points in his last two games. He put up 34 against Miami on Saturday, then 39 on 15-of-28 shooting against Washington on Monday, and Charlotte won both to reach 3-1. On Wednesday he takes that run to Little Caesars Arena, where the Detroit Pistons will be playing for the second night in a row.

That scheduling detail matters more than it looks at first. Detroit visits Madison Square Garden on Tuesday at 8:00pm ET, flies home and tips off against the Hornets at 7:00pm ET the following evening. Charlotte last played on Monday at home, so it arrives with a full day off and no travel worth mentioning.

The Pistons will also be short in the frontcourt. Jalen Duren strained his right hamstring after 10 minutes in Miami on Friday and has been ruled out for at least two weeks. Ausar Thompson sprained his right ankle in the same game, missed Sunday’s win in Philadelphia and is day-to-day.

None of that has slowed Detroit down yet. J.B. Bickerstaff’s team is 3-0, with wins over Boston (121-113), Miami (128-111) and Philadelphia (106-93), and it has outscored opponents by 12.7 points per game. Last season the Pistons won 60 games, finished first in the East and swept the season series with Charlotte 3-0.

So the question for Wednesday is a narrow one. I’m not asking whether Detroit is the better team, because it clearly is. I’m asking whether a tired, thinner Pistons rotation can put real distance between itself and a Hornets team that rebounds well and has a scorer in form.

Detroit Pistons: 3-0 with a deep bench, but Duren is out and Thompson’s ankle is unclear Detroit Pistons

Detroit’s start has been built on balance rather than one big night. Cade Cunningham has scored 22, 16 and 26 points with eight assists in all three games, and he added eight rebounds in Philadelphia. Duncan Robinson has been the second option from outside, with 21, 17 and 21 points and at least five threes in two of those games.

The bench has carried real weight, which is why the Duren injury hurts less than it might. Javonte Green scored 19 off the bench against Boston, including the go-ahead three. In Miami, after Duren went down, Paul Reed came on and scored 19 points with 11 rebounds on 8-of-11 shooting.

John Collins has filled the gap at power forward. He scored 23 on 9-of-15 shooting in Miami, hitting five of six threes, then had 16 points and 11 rebounds in Philadelphia. Daniss Jenkins added 18 points and eight rebounds in that game, and the Pistons made 14 threes as a team while leading 56-44 at halftime.

The worry is the size of the rotation over two nights. Without Duren, Reed is the only true center getting minutes, and he’ll have played at Madison Square Garden less than 24 hours earlier. If Thompson can’t go either, Detroit loses its best perimeter defender and its most active rebounder on the wing.

The head-to-head record leans heavily towards Detroit. The Pistons won 112-86 at home on 20 December, 110-104 in Charlotte on 9 February with 33 points from Cunningham, and 118-100 in Charlotte on 10 April. Duren scored 20 in that last game, and he won’t be on the floor this time.

Charlotte Hornets: Miller in form, Diabaté on the glass, and three rotation players still missing Charlotte Hornets

Charlotte’s season has swung hard in both directions. The Hornets won 110-103 in Brooklyn on opening night, were beaten 128-81 at home by Atlanta two days later, and then won consecutive home games against Miami (115-110) and Washington (110-103). Charles Lee, in his third season, hasn’t had a full roster in any of them.

Kon Knueppel (left hamstring), Coby White (left calf) and Grant Williams (right hamstring) have missed all four games. Lee has said there’s no timeline for Knueppel, and all three have only done individual work on the court. LaMelo Ball is gone too, traded to Minnesota in the offseason, so the ball is in Dennis Schröder’s hands and the shots go to Miller.

Miller’s two big nights came with a lot of shots. He went 10 of 29 against Miami and 15 of 28 against Washington, where he also made five of 10 threes. Naz Reid has been the steadier source, with 20 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists in Brooklyn, 23 points against Miami and 18 points with 12 rebounds on Monday.

Rebounding is where Charlotte can attack this particular Detroit lineup. The Hornets outrebounded Miami 46-37 and Washington 54-41, and Moussa Diabaté pulled down 17 boards in 29 minutes on Monday. Against a Pistons team without Duren and possibly without Thompson, that second-chance edge should grow.

The ball security has improved as well. Charlotte turned it over 48 times in its first two games, then 16 times against Miami and 12 against Washington. The offense still ranks last in the league in efficiency and the Hornets shot 30.8% from three on Monday, which is the main reason they’re a clear underdog here.

Probable lineup Detroit Pistons: Cade Cunningham, Duncan Robinson, Ausar Thompson (questionable, ankle), John Collins, Paul Reed. Jalen Duren is out.
Probable lineup Charlotte Hornets: Dennis Schröder, Brandon Miller, Sion James, Naz Reid, Moussa Diabaté. Kon Knueppel, Coby White and Grant Williams are out.

Our prediction: Charlotte Hornets on the points handicap

No sportsbook had posted a spread for this game at the time of writing, because Detroit still has to play in New York on Tuesday. I’d take Charlotte with the points once the line appears, and I’d be comfortable doing so with anything from six points upwards. Detroit should win the game. The bet is that it won’t win it by much on the second night of a back-to-back.

The case rests on three facts. Detroit plays at Madison Square Garden less than 24 hours before tip-off, Duren is out for at least two weeks and Thompson’s ankle is still unresolved. Charlotte has a day of rest, has outrebounded its opponents by nine and 13 in its last two games, and has a scorer who has just put up 34 and 39.

The obvious counterpoint is that Detroit won all three meetings last season, two of them by 18 or more, and that Charlotte’s offense is the least efficient in the league. That’s fair, but those wins came with Duren and Thompson available and the Pistons fresh. With Reed playing heavy minutes on no rest and Diabaté and Reid crashing the glass, I expect the Hornets to keep this within single digits.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
