A season that never really got going
One foot. Then a face fracture. Then the knee.
Ezi Magbegor has torn the ACL in her right knee while playing for Australia at the FIBA World Cup. The Seattle Storm confirmed the news last night. Her WNBA season is over.
The injury came on Wednesday, during the Opals’ hard-fought 82-80 win over Italy, a result that sent them into the quarter-finals. Basketball Australia said surgery will be needed.
“The Opals will rally around Ezi, and we have no doubt about her character or her resilience as she begins this recovery period,” the federation said in a statement.
Australia were knocked out soon after, beaten 89-66 by Spain on Thursday.

Fourteen games, and that is that
Magbegor is 27. She did not make her season debut until July 2, held back by the foot injury and then the face fracture. She played 14 games in total, nine of them starts. She averaged 6.9 points and 4 rebounds.
Well below her usual standard. Across seven WNBA seasons, all in Seattle, she has averaged 9.5 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. She has been an All-Star and has earned four All-Defensive Team selections.
That is the player the Storm are losing for the rest of this season, and likely for much of the next one too.
Seattle is already looking ahead
The franchise sits at 8 wins and 32 defeats. Bottom of the WNBA. The playoffs have been out of reach for some time.
There are four games left once the World Cup break is over. Four games with nothing left to play for, and without their most reliable interior presence, to close out a season they will want to forget.
