NFL : the Cowboys extend Brevyn Spann-Ford

$18 million over three years

Brevyn Spann-Ford is staying in Dallas. Three years, $18 million, including $12.075 million guaranteed, according to NFL Network. The Cowboys confirmed the deal overnight but did not spell out the numbers.

The tight end was due to hit the end of his contract after the 2026 season. He would have become a restricted free agent. Instead, he is now tied to the franchise through 2029.

His cap hit this season had been $1,090,847, according to Spotrac. This new deal takes things up a level.

Undrafted, then impossible to shift

Spann-Ford is 26. Out of Minnesota, he went undrafted in 2024. Dallas snapped him up as an undrafted free agent straight away.

Two years on, the record is of a player who never misses a call. He has appeared in all 34 games over the past two seasons. 18 catches on 27 targets, 178 yards, one touchdown, 10 first downs.

Last season, he played 17 games, starting five, with nine receptions on 13 targets for 90 yards and a touchdown. He logged 300 offensive snaps, or 25% of the total, and 243 special teams snaps, or 50%.

The numbers tell you exactly what he is. A blocker and a special teams player, not a featured target.

A complementary pairing with Ferguson

Dallas has locked in its blocking tight end. Jake Ferguson, a two-time Pro Bowler, handles the receiving job at the position. Spann-Ford does the rest.

The franchise has tied up this kind of player for four seasons at a reasonable price, while top-tier receiving tight ends are banking far bigger deals. It is the sort of move that barely registers in September and suddenly matters when the cap has to be balanced.

The Cowboys open their season on the road against the New York Giants.
