WNBA: Plum traded to Phoenix as Sparks snap skid

The Sparks win, but lose Plum

Los Angeles sent Kelsey Plum to the Phoenix Mercury. Almost immediately, the Sparks beat the Portland Fire 106-101. Two headlines on the same night, and a roster that already looks very different.

Dearica Hamby finished with 23 points, while Nneka Ogwumike added 22. The pair dragged a team across the line after six straight defeats. The slump ends there, at least for one night.

A clear shift for Los Angeles

Plum’s exit is no small move. The point guard had arrived as the face of a fresh start for the California side. Sending her back to Arizona says plenty about the decisions being made at the halfway point of the season.

Before this win, Los Angeles stood at 10 victories and 17 defeats. The franchise was already playing for its season. Portland Fire, back in the league in 2026, kept pace for long spells before fading in the fourth quarter.

Phoenix lands a scorer

For the Mercury, the deal makes sense. Plum brings scoring punch and experience to a group chasing the playoffs. The only real question now is which side will look smartest when summer is over.
