Winnipeg Jets vs Florida Panthers: five one-goal defeats in a row, and a Florida roster missing Barkov and Marchand NHL

Aleksander Barkov, Brad Marchand and Jacob Markstrom are all listed out for Florida. That’s the captain, a veteran winger and the starting goalie missing from the same roster, and the Panthers still won in Chicago on Sunday to move to 6-4-2.

They travel to Canada Life Centre on Tuesday 27 October, puck drop 8:00pm ET, to face a Winnipeg team that hasn’t won since 13 October. The Jets are 4-4-3 and have lost five straight: 4-3 in overtime in Chicago, 3-2 at home to Carolina, 2-1 in St. Louis, 3-2 in overtime in Dallas and 2-1 to Montreal in Sunday’s Heritage Classic.

Every one of those five defeats was by a single goal. Winnipeg have allowed 2.7 goals per game, eighth-best in the league, but they’ve scored 2.5, which ranks 27th. Two of the five losses came in overtime, and the Jets have picked up two points from the whole run.

Florida’s attack isn’t much better on the season numbers. The Panthers score 2.8 goals per game, 23rd in the league, and they went 1-5 in Ottawa and 0-4 in Pittsburgh last week before the win in Chicago. Their goal difference sits at zero for the season.

No line had been posted for this game when we filed. Both teams are in the bottom 10 for scoring, both are short of regulars, and the Jets’ last five games have produced seven, five, three, five and three goals. We think the total is where the value sits.

Winnipeg Jets: 2.5 goals a game and a 0-3-2 slide Winnipeg Jets

Kyle Connor has nine goals, nearly a third of the team’s total. Mark Scheifele leads the Jets with seven assists. Beyond those two, the scoring has dried up: Isaac Rosen’s third-period goal against Montreal on Sunday was Winnipeg’s only one in 60 minutes outdoors.

Winnipeg outshot Montreal 34-21 in that game and still lost. Jacob Fowler made 33 saves for the Canadiens, and the Jets’ finishing has been the common thread of the run. They’ve scored two goals or fewer in four of the five defeats.

The goaltending has kept Winnipeg within a goal in every game of the losing run. Stuart Skinner’s .911 save percentage is higher than Markstrom’s .898, and the Jets rank ninth in the league at .894 as a team. He stopped 19 of 21 on Sunday.

Two defensemen are missing from the Winnipeg blue line. Josh Morrissey is out with an upper-body injury and fellow defenseman Brown with a lower-body problem, and up front Nick Bjugstad (pectoral) and Vladislav Namestnikov are also listed out.

The Jets take few penalties, 6.8 minutes per game, the third-lowest figure in the league. Fewer penalties mean fewer power plays for opponents, and none of Winnipeg’s last five opponents scored more than four.

Florida Panthers: the most penalized team in the league, without three regulars Florida Panthers

Brady Tkachuk leads Florida with 10 goals, and Matthew Tkachuk has 13 assists. The Tkachuk brothers have carried an attack that has been feast or famine: 7-3 in Columbus and 8-3 against Seattle earlier in October, then one goal in two games at Ottawa and Pittsburgh.

Florida spend more time in the box than any team in the league, 15.1 penalty minutes per game. Their penalty kill ranks sixth at 84.9%, which has limited the damage, and the Jets’ power play converts 19.4%, 19th in the league.

Markstrom’s upper-body injury has put Akira Schmid in net. He was named the starter for Sunday’s win in Chicago by the team before puck drop. As a team the Panthers are saving .881, 18th in the league, and they’ve allowed 2.8 goals per game.

Barkov (lower body) and Marchand (leg) are both out, along with Jonah Gadjovich (upper body). Barkov’s absence leaves Florida thin down the middle, and the Panthers rank 27th in faceoffs at 46.2%. The Jets are 29th at 45.4%, so neither team will have the puck off the draw often.

Florida have played nine of their 12 games away from home, with stops in Ottawa, Pittsburgh and Chicago in the past week alone. They’re 4-3-2 away from Sunrise, including the overtime win in Carolina on opening night.

Probable lineup Winnipeg Jets: Stuart Skinner in goal; Connor, Scheifele, Vilardi, Rosen up front (Morrissey, Brown, Bjugstad, Namestnikov out)
Probable lineup Florida Panthers: Akira Schmid in goal; Brady Tkachuk, Matthew Tkachuk up front (Barkov, Marchand, Markstrom out)

Our prediction: Under 5.5 goals

Four of Winnipeg’s last five games finished with five goals or fewer, and the Jets haven’t scored more than three in any of them. Their 2.5 goals per game ranks 27th in the league, and they’ve been held to one goal in two of their last three games. Florida’s 2.8 ranks 23rd, and they arrive without their best centre.

The risk to this pick is Florida’s penalty count. A team taking 15.1 minutes a night hands opponents plenty of power plays, and that’s how a game like this goes over. We’d set that against an 84.9% Florida kill and a Winnipeg power play that sits 19th.

The total wasn’t available when we wrote this. If it opens at 5.5 at a price of 1.45 or longer, Under is our pick; if it opens at 6.5, Under 6.5 becomes the safer version of the same view.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

No commitment from us

Our predictions carry no contractual value. They have no legal standing. In short: you cannot rely on them to claim anything if a bet doesn’t come through.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.

Your responsibility

Before placing a bet, simply check that gambling is legal in your country. If it isn’t, that’s your responsibility, not ours.

We can’t say it enough: gamble responsibly. If you’re struggling to stay in control, don’t wait to seek help.
