West Ham United vs Queens Park Rangers: 22 goals scored against seven conceded
Twenty-two goals in eight Championship games. West Ham have been scoring for fun in the second tier, and on Friday night they get the chance to go back to the top of the table.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s side host Queens Park Rangers at the London Stadium on Friday 9 October, with kick-off at 21:00 Paris time (20:00 UK). It’s Gameweek 9, it’s a London derby of sorts, and the stakes are clear: win, and the Hammers are top again. Lose, and QPR jump over them.
West Ham sit second on 15 points with just one league defeat. That’s a solid return for a club that came down from the Premier League in the summer and had to rebuild on the fly. The start was slow. The last month hasn’t been.
QPR are sixth on 13 points, and they’ve built their season on something West Ham don’t have: a back line that doesn’t leak. Seven goals conceded in eight games. Few sides in the division can say the same. The flip side is that Julien Stephan’s men have drawn three on the bounce and haven’t won in four.
So it’s attack against defence. The Hammers’ firepower against the Rs’ organisation. And both clubs share one odd record: they’re the only two sides in the Championship still unbeaten away from home this season.
Something has to give on Friday. The numbers point in one direction, and the visitors’ injury list points the same way.
West Ham United: goals everywhere, but only two clean sheets
Last time out, West Ham went 2-0 down at The Den. Millwall had them on the ropes. They came back for a 2-2 draw, and that tells you plenty about the character Nuno has built in a short space of time.
The run before that was ruthless. Wolves were beaten 4-2 at the London Stadium, Derby County 3-0, Bolton 3-2 on the road, and then Wrexham were taken apart 6-0. That’s 16 goals in four league games. When this team gets going, it doesn’t stop.
Here’s the catch. West Ham have kept only two clean sheets in the league, at home to Derby and Wrexham. Nine Championship sides have conceded fewer. A defence that ships goals this often can’t afford to switch off against a team that’s comfortable sitting deep and waiting. That’s the one genuine worry.
There’s also a suspension to deal with. Mohamadou Kante was sent off for a cynical professional foul after coming off the bench at Millwall, so he’s out. Joel Veltman picked up a muscle issue before the international break and will be assessed, while Oliver Scarles could come in for Morato at left-back. Konstantinos Mavropanos picked up a minor knock with Greece but should be fine.
None of that changes the shape of the side much. Bowen, Walker-Peters and Solomon are all expected to start, with Piroe and Castellanos leading the line. The goals have come from everywhere. That’s what makes this team so hard to plan for.
The last three league visitors to the London Stadium, Wolves, Derby and Wrexham, left having conceded 13 between them. Can QPR’s back line hold out for 90 minutes there? It’d take some doing.

Queens Park Rangers: seven conceded in eight, but a treatment room that keeps growing
Seven conceded in eight. That’s QPR’s calling card, and it’s the reason they’re sixth despite a stalling run. Stephan has built a side that knows what it’s about: compact, hard to break down, happy to frustrate.
The early weeks were bright. A 2-1 win at Blackburn, then 2-1 at home against Cardiff. Then the brakes went on. Middlesbrough won 1-0 at Loftus Road, and since then it’s been draw after draw: 0-0 at Charlton, 1-1 at West Brom and a chaotic 2-2 against Preston, where QPR fell behind with ten men before rallying late.
Four games without a win. Three draws in a row. The numbers don’t lie: this side is struggling to turn control into points.
The squad situation doesn’t help. Dennis Cirkin is suspended after his red card against Preston. Glen Kamara could also be ruled out because of a potential complaint from Finland. On top of that, Tariq Lamptey, Boy Kemper, Ilias Chair, Karamoko Dembele and Richard Kone all need assessing after the break. That’s a long list for a squad that relies on its shape.
What QPR do have is a road record worth respecting. Eight points from four away games, no defeats. They travel well, they defend well and they don’t panic when they’re under pressure. That’s a genuine strength against a West Ham side that doesn’t keep clean sheets.
But a draw machine needs everything to click when it visits the top two. With Cirkin out, Kamara a doubt and Chair, Kone and Lamptey all in the balance, it’s hard to see this version of QPR having enough to hold West Ham’s attack for 90 minutes. The hard yards have caught up with them.
Probable lineup West Ham United: Hermansen; Walker-Peters, Mavropanos, Kilman, Morato; Bowen, Mukasa, Engels, Solomon; Piroe; Castellanos
Probable lineup Queens Park Rangers: Charles; Mbengue, Edwards, Dunne, Adamson; Vale, Madsen, Varane, Poku; Scarlett, Burrell

Our prediction: West Ham United to win at 1.55
West Ham have scored 22 goals in eight league games and swept aside Wolves, Derby and Wrexham at the London Stadium. QPR have drawn three straight and haven’t won in four. The momentum gap is real.
The visitors’ defensive record is excellent, but it’s about to be tested without Cirkin, possibly without Kamara, and with five more players needing assessments. A team built on structure can ill afford to lose that many pieces at once, especially away to one of the most prolific attacks in the division.
The draw at 4.00 is the price you’d take if you believed QPR’s back line would hold firm all night. We don’t. West Ham at 1.55 is the call: home advantage, firepower and a chance to go top. They’ll take it.
in your pocket.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there’s no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses, that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- In the end, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
