Wawrinka vs Berrettini – Free Wimbledon Pick – June 30, 2026

This is the kind of match-up that makes you reach for the remote. On Tuesday, the opening round at Wimbledon serves up a fresh and highly charged showdown : Stanislas Wawrinka against Matteo Berrettini. And it is about more than tennis. This one has a touch of history about it, with the 2026 tournament set to be the Swiss star’s last chance to step out on the London grass.

Wawrinka, three-time Grand Slam champion wants one last proper send-off at the one Major that still eludes him, having already reached the quarter-finals here twice. Across the net, Berrettini is chasing his own memories of past glory at the All England Club, five years on from his run to the 2021 final.

At 41, Stan Wawrinka knows time is not on his side. The Swiss veteran is no longer close to the consistency he once had, having fallen at the first hurdle in four of his last five Grand Slam events. His recent level has been patchy at best : in his last seven matches on tour, he has made it through the opening round just twice, including a straight-sets win over Alex Michelsen in Geneva last month.

Even so, the English grass has usually treated him pretty well early on. He missed last year’s edition, but he has still won four of his last five opening matches at Wimbledon. The real issue for Wawrinka lately is how often he starts slowly. Weighed down by recurring injuries, he has not taken the first set in a major since his very first match at Roland Garros in 2024.

Now down at No. 110 in the world, Wawrinka returns after a month out, his last appearance coming on 25 May in Paris, where Jesper de Jong beat him in the first round (3-6, 6-3, 3-6, 4-6). With a 8 wins and 14 losses record in 2026, he arrives on grass without a warm-up match in his legs. Career-wise on this surface, he sits perfectly level: 35 wins and 35 losses. If he is to cause trouble, he will need the serve to do the heavy lifting, and he has had plenty of success there this year, winning more than 80% of his service games and 75% of points behind his first serve.

On the other side, Matteo Berrettini brings far more certainty on this surface. Ranked No. 49 in the ATP standings, the Italian powerhouse owns an excellent career record on grass with 45 wins and just 13 defeats. He became the first player from his country to reach at least the quarter-finals in all four Grand Slam tournaments, and he would love to follow in the footsteps of compatriot Jannik Sinner, who won the title last year.

It is not all plain sailing for the Roman in London, though. He has made it through the first round in two of his last three visits, but he was surprisingly knocked out at the first stage in 2025 by Kamil Majchrzak in five sets. That was a rare slip, as it was one of only two opening-round exits he has suffered in Grand Slams over the whole decade. Unlike Wawrinka, the Italian often starts fast, having won the first set in three of his five major outings this season.

Berrettini is also back after a setback at Roland Garros, where he retired in the quarter-finals against Matteo Arnaldi on 3 June while trailing (7-5, 5-2 ret.). His 2026 record stands at 15 wins and 12 defeats, and he too has not played on grass yet this year. His weapons remain dangerous even agains : he wins more than 80% of his service games and saves 67% of the break points he faces. He tends to handle opening matches well too, reaching the second round in three of his last four tournaments, with his only stumble coming in Madrid against Dino Prizmic.

Tennis Pick Wawrinka vs Berrettini

More than 3.5 sets in the match

Matteo Berrettini’s firepower and younger legs should tilt this one his way against a 41-year-old Wawrinka who may simply be running on fumes. But the Swiss is not heading to Wimbledon for a polite farewell. He will scrap for every point. Both men have posted strong serving numbers this year, with each winning more than 80% of their service games, so this has the makings of a tight, serve-dominated battle with very few breaks. Wawrinka nicking at least one set before fading physically against the Italian feels like a live call.

First, a word on our picks

What we publish on mathodds is analysis, nothing more. We share an opinion, a read on the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport is what it is: unpredictable. One injury, one retirement out of nowhere, and the script flips completely.

Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when something looks obvious, it really is not. And yes, that means you can lose. In fact, you will lose at some point.

The best approach is to stay sensible. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Do not touch money you need to live on. And above all: do not chase your losses, because that rarely ends well.

A bet should stay a bit of fun, not a job or a source of income. If you feel it is taking over your day, getting under your skin, or putting you under pressure, take a break. And if you need to, speak to a specialist support organisation. That is what they are there for.

In the end, the responsibility is yours. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, even with the best analysis in the world.

Important reminder: betting is illegal for minors and must comply with the law in your country. Gambling can spiral quickly, leading to money losses, family tension and addiction. Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.

No commitment from us

Our picks are not contracts. They have no legal force. In plain English: you cannot use them to claim anything if a bet loses.

Information changes

A pick is always based on what we know when it is written. But then a player gets injured, the weather turns, and the analysis can be out of date fast. We cannot be held responsible for that.

Your responsibility

Before you bet, make sure gambling is legal where you are. If it is not, that is on you, not us.

Responsible gambling first

We cannot say this enough: gamble in moderation. If you are struggling to stay in control, do not wait to get help. We cannot be responsible for compulsive or excessive use of the information published on the site.

Legal age
