Villarreal vs Deportivo La Coruna: third in La Liga still waiting for a win 
Two points from three matches and a 15th-place spot in the table. Villarreal, who finished third in La Liga last season, are still hunting that first victory before they host Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday, 5 September at 21:00, Spanish time, at the Estadio de la Ceramica.
The promoted Galician side arrive with five points and an eighth-place standing. On paper, that gap looks ugly for the Yellow Submarine.
Deportivo are unbeaten since coming back to the top flight. Three matches in, with two draws and a win, and they have every right to feel pleased with themselves.
The Galician club are back in the first division for the first time since 2017-18. They even spent time in the third tier in between, which tells you enough about the journey.
Villarreal are already under pressure here because of what comes next. Borussia Dortmund arrive the following week for their Champions League opener.
Drop more home points before that kind of fixture and Iñigo Perez will be feeling the heat fast. The coach took over this summer and is still chasing his first win.
The overall head-to-head is tighter than you might think. Deportivo have 13 wins to Villarreal’s 12, with nine draws.
The last meeting was in May 2018 and ended 4-2 to the Yellow Submarine. The Galicians have not beaten Villarreal since a 2-0 win in May 2016.
But one detail changes the feel of this early-season picture. Villarreal played their first three matches away, and Saturday is their first home game of the campaign.
So an established European side now host an unbeaten promoted team that has already shown it can handle the pace. The table says one thing. The football says another.

Villarreal began with a 2-2 draw away at Racing Santander. They then held Atletico Madrid to the same scoreline.
Taking a point at the Metropolitano is no small thing. Those two draws suggest a side capable of going toe to toe with anyone.
Then came the third match, and the momentum went missing. A 1-0 defeat at Alaves left the Yellow Submarine without a win and down in 15th.
They have scored four times in their first three games, which is hardly a disaster. The problem is finishing off matches they have controlled.
The summer window goes some way to explaining the clunky start. Only Peter Gulacsi and Nathan Saliba came in, while 13 players left either on loan or permanently.
Rebuilding a squad after that much turnover with just two arrivals takes time. Iñigo Perez is paying for that imbalance already.
The good news from the treatment room is that Villarreal should be close to full strength, with only Juan Foyth still a slight doubt.
Gerard Moreno and Georges Mikautadze will lead the line. Alex Freeman is expected to start at right-back.
Pau Navarro should come in for Foyth in the centre if the Argentine misses out. The rest of the spine should stay the same.

Deportivo opened their top-flight return with a 1-1 draw against Elche. They then brought home another 1-1 from their trip to Malaga.
The third match produced their first real statement of the season. The Galicians beat Valencia 3-1 in front of their own fans.
Five points from three games and still unbeaten, the promoted side have settled into the top half. Few expected that.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is leading the line with impressive consistency. The 37-year-old has scored in each of Deportivo’s three league games so far.
Bil Nsongo is alongside him up front and is already causing problems for opposition defences. That pair is the main threat Villarreal will have to watch.
Antonio Hidalgo has benefited from a very busy window, with 10 arrivals and nine departures. The squad has changed shape, but it has clicked quicker than expected.
Two absences still complicate the manager’s plans. Noe is out with an ankle problem and Adria Alti is suspended after being sent off against Valencia.
Losing a player to a red card the week before a trip to a Champions League club is far from ideal. The rest of the squad, though, is available.
Deportivo have not won at Villarreal for 10 years. Their first major away test of the season is therefore coming at a ground that has not been kind to them.
