Venezia vs Inter: the leaders keep coming from behind, the bottom side keep conceding Serie A

Inter have come from behind to win five times in their last eight Serie A matches. The latest was Sunday’s 2-1 over Fiorentina at San Siro, where Alex Jimenez put the visitors ahead on 64 minutes before Marcus Thuram equalised and Piotr Zielinski converted a stoppage-time penalty.

That win left Cristian Chivu’s side on 22 points from eight games, top on goal difference ahead of Lazio. They’ve won seven and drawn one, and they’ve scored 23 league goals, more than any other side in the division. It’s their best Serie A start since 2017.

Venezia are bottom with three points from eight games: one win and seven defeats. They lost their first six under Giovanni Stroppa, the coach who brought them up in May, and he was sacked after a 3-1 defeat at Atalanta on 12 October.

Davide Nicola took over on 15 October and won his first match two days later, 1-0 at home to Napoli, with Akor Adams scoring on 49 minutes and Filip Stankovic saving a Kevin De Bruyne penalty. The second game under Nicola went the other way: a 1-0 defeat at Genoa on Sunday.

The two sides meet at the Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo on Wednesday 28 October, kick-off 17:30 UK time. Inter have won the last five meetings in all competitions, including a 5-1 Coppa Italia win last season in which Thuram scored twice, and they’ve won their last two visits to Venice without conceding.

We think the margin matters more than the result here. Venezia have conceded more than two goals per game this season, and the question is whether Nicola’s 3-5-2 can keep the score respectable for a second time against a side from the top half.

Venezia: one clean sheet in eight games, and it came with 29% of the ball Venezia

The Napoli win was real, but the numbers around it were lopsided. Napoli had 71% of possession and 29 shots to Venezia’s nine, ten of them on target. Stankovic made several saves, including a Stanislav Lobotka effort heading for the top corner, and Juan Jesus blocked a Rasmus Hojlund shot near the line.

Nicola has moved Venezia to three centre-backs, with Jesus, Redouane Halhal and Matias Moreno, Antoine Hainaut and Ridgeciano Haps as wing-backs, and Kike Perez, Toma Basic and Simon Sohm in the middle. Up front, Adams and John Yeboah play close together.

Adams is the only real source of goals. He’s scored twice in his last four league games, the Napoli winner among them, and Sohm’s long ball over the top for that goal is the pattern Venezia will rely on again: sit deep, then hit the striker early.

The record before Nicola still hangs over this squad. Venezia lost 3-2 at Frosinone, 4-2 at home to Fiorentina, 2-0 at home to Lazio and 3-1 at Atalanta, conceding 16 goals across their first six games. They’ve scored more than once in only two of eight league matches.

The injury list doesn’t help a defence that needs every body. Marin Sverko, Bartol Franjic and Andrea Adorante are still recovering, and Thierry Correia is a doubt. Captain Gianluca Busio is back in contention.

Inter: 22 points without Lautaro, and second halves that keep rescuing them Inter

Inter’s last six league results read 3-2 against Napoli, 5-3 against Udinese, 2-2 at Roma, 3-0 against Parma, 3-1 at Bologna and 2-1 against Fiorentina. They’ve scored at least twice in every one of them.

They’re unbeaten in 18 Serie A games and have scored in each. The last league defeat came on 8 March, 1-0 against AC Milan.

Lautaro Martinez is injured, and so are Benjamin Pavard, Luis Henrique, John Stones and Curtis Jones. Jones is the closest to returning but isn’t expected to travel. Without the captain, Thuram and Francesco Pio Esposito have shared the front line, and both started on Sunday.

Against Fiorentina, Inter had three clear chances in the last ten minutes of the first half, all saved by David de Gea, and Carlos Augusto hit the crossbar twice in two minutes after the break. That’s a side creating plenty and finishing late, which is how the comebacks keep happening.

Away from San Siro the defence has been looser. Inter have conceded in their last two away league games, the 2-2 at Roma and the 3-1 at Bologna. Ivan Provedel made his debut in goal on Sunday, and Chivu has a midweek decision on whether to rest Thuram, which would leave Esposito and Ange-Yoan Bonny as the options up front.

Probable lineup Venezia: Stankovic; Halhal, Moreno, Jesus; Hainaut, Perez, Sohm, Basic, Haps; Yeboah, Adams
Probable lineup Inter: Provedel; Bisseck, Akanji, Bastoni; Diouf, Barella, Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, Carlos Augusto; Thuram, Esposito

Free Serie A Prediction: Venezia vs Inter

Our prediction: Inter to win by two or more goals (handicap -1.5)

A straight Inter win is the obvious result and too short to back on its own, so we’re taking the margin. Venezia have conceded more than two a game across eight matches, and Inter have scored at least twice in each of their last six league games, winning three of those by two goals or more.

Inter won only 1-0 on their last trip to the Penzo in January 2025, and Nicola’s side kept Napoli out for 90 minutes ten days ago. We’d weigh that one clean sheet against the 29 shots Napoli took, and against the 16 goals Venezia let in before the coaching change.

Inter have dropped two points all season and keep creating chances late in games, so even a slow start shouldn’t stop them pulling clear. We expect a 3-0 or 3-1 and back Inter on the -1.5 handicap.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
