Three goals, one player behind all of them
Kristoffer Velde had a hand in every Portland goal overnight. He scored the first, he created the second, he created the third. The Timbers beat San Diego FC 3-1 and Marti Cifuentes won his home debut as manager.
The opener in the 29th minute began inside Portland’s own box. Velde collected a pass, carried the counter down the left, drifted diagonally into the middle while combining with Cole Bassett, then struck a 25-yard shot into the netting just inside the far left post.
Gabriel Pirani answered in first-half stoppage time with a low finish from the edge of the area, his first goal since arriving from D.C. United last month. That was as good as the night got for the visitors.

Velde keeps pulling defenders out of shape
Six minutes into the second half, Velde played a line-breaking pass that released Jimer Fory on the left. Fory drove a low cross into the path of Ariel Lassiter, who finished first time. In the 68th minute Velde took a pass from David Da Costa, slalomed into the penalty area dragging markers with him, and rolled the ball back outside the box. Da Costa shifted right and curled a 22-yard shot beyond CJ dos Santos and inside the post.
That is five goals for the Norwegian this season, plus two assists in a single evening. James Pantemis made five saves at the other end, dos Santos two, and the shot-count gap tells you how one-directional the second half became.
Playoff arithmetic bites
Portland sit 8-9-3 for 27 points, which is now good enough for the ninth and final Western Conference playoff position. They have lost once in six league matches, a run that has quietly turned their season from written off to live.
San Diego drop to 6-8-6 and 24 points. They were without Anders Dreyer, their assists leader and second-highest scorer, who served a one-match red-card suspension. Without him they failed again to win consecutive league matches, something they have not managed since opening the season 3-0-0. That start feels a long way off now.
