An hour a man down, and one goal was enough
Eight minutes. That is all it took Lucas Sanabria to collect two yellow cards and leave San Jose to play the entire second half with 10 men at Dignity Health Sports Park. LA Galaxy won it 1-0.
Joseph Paintsil broke the deadlock in the 79th minute, finishing a cross from 19-year-old defender Harbor Miller. It was the Galaxy’s first goal in three matches.

Marcinkowski saves five against the club that raised him
JT Marcinkowski spent years in San Jose colours. On Wednesday he made five stops against them, the last one in the 89th minute on a Jack Jasinski header from inside the box.
The Earthquakes owned the ball once they went down to 10. Thirteen shots to five after the interval. Preston Judd and Beau Leroux came on in the 61st minute to sharpen things up front, and none of it mattered.
Odd, because the opening half-hour had looked the same way. San Jose led 6-0 on shots and still went in level at 8-5 by the break. Angus Gunn made six saves of his own.
One goal or fewer in four of their last five games, for what should be one of the more dangerous attacks in the Western Conference. The back line, at least, has been patched up: head coach Bruce Arena shuffled eight starters after his side shipped 12 goals in four games coming out of the World Cup break.
25 points, and a first exhale for Los Angeles
The Galaxy (6-8-7, 25 points) had not won in six since the restart. Their season remains a slog. The California Clasico still handed them something to keep, though: one win and one draw from the two meetings.
San Jose (10-7-3, 33 points) have lost just three of 11 on the road. The table reads well enough. The bluntness in the final third is another matter.
Hirving Lozano made his first start in Galaxy colours, his second appearance overall, and lasted 68 minutes. The Mexican had not started an MLS game since October 4 of last season.
