Utah Mammoth vs Minnesota Wild: 3.7 goals against a game in Utah’s last ten, and the league’s leading scorer coming to town NHL

Utah have conceded 3.7 goals a game over their last 10, slightly more than the 3.6 they’ve scored, and still gone 6-4-0 in that stretch. They host Minnesota in Salt Lake City on Tuesday 27 October, puck drop 9pm ET, in the first meeting of the season between the two Central Division sides.

The Wild are 8-3-2 and 2-1-0 against Central opponents. Their 41 goals, 3.2 a game, rank ninth in the league, and they’ve allowed 2.5 a game across their last 10, a run of 6-3-1.

Utah are 8-4 overall and 1-0-0 within the division. Utah’s last 10 games have averaged 7.3 goals between the two teams, Minnesota’s 5.7.

Kirill Kaprizov scored his NHL-leading 13th goal of the season early in the third period in Vancouver on Sunday, as Minnesota won 4-2. He also has eight assists from 13 games.

Both teams are short. Minnesota are without goaltender Filip Gustavsson, Brock Faber and both Nick and Marcus Foligno, while Utah are missing John Marino, Maveric Lamoureux and Michael Carcone.

Utah Mammoth: Keller’s 15 points, and 10.4 penalty minutes a night Utah Mammoth

Clayton Keller leads Utah with four goals and 11 assists. Nick Schmaltz has added four goals and six assists over the last 10 games.

The best night of the season so far came at Rogers Place on 15 October. Keller scored twice, one on the power play and one into an empty net, Barrett Hayton added a power-play goal, Logan Cooley had a goal and an assist, and Karel Vejmelka made 22 saves in a 4-2 win that handed Edmonton its first regulation defeat.

That result made Utah 6-2-0 with three straight wins. They’ve gone 2-2 since, including a 5-4 win over Pittsburgh and a 6-2 defeat to Edmonton.

Discipline is a recurring issue. Utah average 10.4 penalty minutes a game, ninth-most in the league, and they’ve taken 4.4 penalties a night across their last 10.

Their power play has been productive early in the season, which partly offsets those penalty numbers. Marino (upper body), Lamoureux (shoulder) and Carcone (upper body) are all ruled out.

Minnesota Wild: Kaprizov and Hughes both scored in Vancouver, with Pickard in goal Minnesota Wild

Quinn Hughes scored a power-play goal midway through the second period in Vancouver on Sunday to make it 3-0. It was his 500th NHL point, in his 520th game, the second-fastest any American defenceman has reached the mark behind Brian Leetch at 496.

Hughes has three goals and 13 assists in 13 games. Maxim Shabanov had a goal and an assist against the Canucks, and Bobby Brink also scored.

Kaprizov’s goal made it 4-0 early in the third period, and he added an assist. His 13 goals have come in 13 games, and Matthew Boldy has five goals and six assists over the last 10.

Calvin Pickard made 15 saves on Sunday with Gustavsson out with a hip injury. Faber is out with a skull injury, Nick Foligno with an upper-body problem and Marcus Foligno with a lower-body injury.

Minnesota have averaged 3.9 penalties a game over their last 10, fewer than Utah. They’ve scored 3.2 goals and allowed 2.5 a night in that run.

Our prediction: Kirill Kaprizov to score (anytime goalscorer)

Kaprizov has 13 goals in 13 games, and he faces a Utah defence that has let in 3.7 a game over its last 10 and is missing Marino and Lamoureux. Utah also take 4.4 penalties a night, and Kaprizov and Hughes both scored on Sunday with Hughes’s coming on the power play.

We’d rather back the player than either side. Utah’s attack scores 3.6 a game over 10 and Minnesota have their first-choice goaltender out, so the result is close to a coin toss. The goalscorer market removes that problem, and Kaprizov is averaging a goal a game this season.

Goalscorer prices weren’t available at the time of writing. We’d take Kaprizov anytime at 1.90 or longer.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

No commitment from us

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.

Your responsibility

Before placing a bet, simply check that gambling is legal in your country. If it isn’t, that’s your responsibility, not ours.

Responsible gambling

We can’t say it enough: gamble responsibly. If you’re struggling to stay in control, don’t wait to seek help.
