Utah Jazz vs Miami Heat: six straight Jazz losses and the last stop of a Heat road trip NBA

Keyonte George scored 39 points, with nine assists and four steals, in New Orleans on Wednesday, and Utah still lost 120-113 in overtime. It was the Jazz’s sixth straight defeat, and it left them 1-7 and tied for the worst record in the NBA.

Miami is the visitor at the Delta Center on Tuesday 10 November, with tip-off at 9:00pm ET. The Heat are 3-6, but they’ve been a better team away from Kaseya Center than at home: 2-3 on the road against 1-3 at home, with wins in Atlanta, 129-117, and at the Clippers, 117-116 in overtime.

The game closes a five-stop West Coast trip for Miami that started with a 138-117 loss to the Lakers and continued with a 120-100 loss at Golden State on Thursday. The Heat play in Sacramento on Sunday at 9:00pm ET and get one day off before Utah.

Utah’s schedule is heavier. The Jazz play in Dallas on Friday and in Minnesota on Sunday, so Tuesday is their first home game after a four-game road trip. Their only win this season came at home, 120-119 against New Orleans in the second game of the year, and they’ve lost the four home games since.

The scoring numbers point the same way as the records. Utah averages about 107.8 points and allows 119.0. Miami averages 116.0 and allows 122.6, which is one of the league’s weaker defensive marks, but the Heat score more than eight points a game more than the Jazz.

Utah Jazz: George at 39, an 11-of-47 night from three and no Jaren Jackson Jr. Utah Jazz

George has carried the offense through the losing run. He led Utah in scoring with 26 against Memphis, 31 against San Antonio and 39 in New Orleans, and the Jazz lost all three.

The shooting around him hasn’t held up. Utah made 11 of its 47 three-point attempts on Wednesday and stayed in the game only because it hit nearly 64% of its twos. Lauri Markkanen scored 21 and Ace Bailey 15, and no other Jazz player reached double figures.

Darryn Peterson, the No. 2 pick in June, has been a passer more than a scorer so far. He had seven assists against two turnovers in New Orleans while shooting 2-of-8, after six assists and one turnover against San Antonio on Monday.

The frontcourt is where Will Hardy is short. Jaren Jackson Jr. hurt his knee against Memphis on 26 October and isn’t expected back before 14 December. Jusuf Nurkic has a foot injury and is listed out until at least 13 November, and Trey Alexander is a game-time decision with a knee problem.

The margins have also widened as the losing run has gone on. Portland beat Utah 112-90 at the Delta Center, and San Antonio won 119-97 on Monday. The Jazz scored 16 points in the first quarter of that Spurs game, their season low.

Miami Heat: 2-3 away from home, with Antetokounmpo and Adebayo sharing the load Miami Heat

Bam Adebayo scored 35 at the Clippers on Wednesday, and Klay Thompson hit the winning three with a second left in overtime. That’s the version of this team that Erik Spoelstra will want in Salt Lake City: a second scorer taking pressure off Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Antetokounmpo has led Miami in scoring six times in nine games, with 35, 36, 29, 24, 31 and 30, and he’s led it in rebounds seven times. He had 20 points and 14 rebounds at Golden State, where the Heat were outscored 26-9 in one stretch of the third quarter.

Davion Mitchell runs the offense. He’s led Miami in assists in six games, including 11 in the win over Indiana, and he scored 22 with eight assists against the Warriors. Andrew Wiggins had a quieter night at his old building, two points on 1-of-6 shooting.

The defense is the reason Miami sits at 3-6. Minnesota scored 131, Detroit 128 and the Lakers 138, and Golden State made 16 of 41 threes on Thursday despite Spoelstra calling three-point defense “high on the priority list”.

The Heat had no players listed on the injury report as of Friday, which leaves Spoelstra with a full rotation for the last two games of the trip.

Our prediction: Miami Heat to win

Miami scores about eight more points a game than Utah, it has won twice on the road, and it arrives with a full roster against a Jazz team missing Jackson and Nurkic. Antetokounmpo and Adebayo should have the advantage inside against a frontcourt that’s down to Markkanen and backups.

Utah’s best argument is George, who has scored 31 and 39 in two of the last four games, and Miami’s defense, which has allowed 120 or more in five of nine games. If the Jazz shoot better than 11-of-47 from three, they can keep this close into the fourth quarter.

We’d still take the Heat. Utah hasn’t won since its second game, it’s lost by 22 at home to Portland and its own three-point shooting has been the weak point of the trip. No moneylines were posted at the time of writing, and we’d play Miami only at 1.45 or longer.

About our free predictions

  • What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute goal, and the script changes completely.
  • Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
  • The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses: that rarely ends well.
  • A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
  • Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
  • Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes

A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and kick-off, a lineup can change, a player picks up an injury, the weather turns, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
