United States – Paraguay : Co-hosts kick off their World Cup journey in Los Angeles
It’s the big night for the third co-host in the competition as they open Group D. The United States meet Paraguay on Friday in Los Angeles, and the atmosphere is set to be huge. For the Americans, this first home fixture is vital if they want to grab control of the section. Against a South American side known for its defensive grit, the US will have to go at them physically to bank all three points.
The United States want a strong start
For this opening clash, the United States are leaning on the tactical work Mauricio Pochettino has put in over the past two years. The US boss is relying on veteran Tim Ream to steady a back line missing Chris Richards. In midfield, the Americans will turn to Weston McKennie’s industry. The attacking spark will come from Christian Pulisic, with Folarin Balogun the target up front. The crowd is expecting a big display to get the tournament moving in the right direction. The US forwards will need to be sharp against a packed defence. A win would give the country’s World Cup hopes an ideal launchpad. The whole nation is ready to get behind them.
Paraguay arrive with no pressure at all
Paraguay, meanwhile, are back at the World Cup finals for the first time since 2010 after scraping sixth place in the brutal CONMEBOL qualifying campaign. Gustavo Alfaro’s side have built a solid reputation, not least by taking down reigning world champions Argentina along the way. Built on an iron defence led by captain Gustavo Gomez and the craft of creator Julio Enciso, who is fit despite a thigh scare, La Albirroja are determined to upset the odds and spoil the California party.
Probable line-ups
United States : Freese ; Freeman, M. Robinson, Ream ; Dest, McKennie, Adams, A. Robinson ; Pulisic, Tillman ; Balogun
Paraguay : Gill ; Caceres, G. Gomez, Alderete, Alonso ; Bobadilla, Cubas ; D. Gomez, Enciso, Almiron ; Sanabria

World Cup Prediction United States vs Paraguay
United States to win
This Group D opener should go the way of the hosts, backed by a huge wave of support in California. The United States look more and more cohesive under Mauricio Pochettino and have picked up plenty of confidence from their warm-up games. The pace of their transitions and the technical quality of players like Christian Pulisic and Malik Tillman should be enough to crack the visitors’ back line.
Paraguay, by contrast, have a long history of struggling in opening matches and have never beaten a host nation at a major tournament. The South Americans are pragmatic enough, but they may struggle to find enough going forward to cope with the physical intensity the home midfield are likely to bring. Under constant pressure and wave after wave of US attacks, La Albirroja should eventually fold. A logical win for the co-hosts is the call.
in your pocket.

First, a word on our predictions
- What we publish on mathodds is analysis, nothing more. We share an opinion, a read on the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport is what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a freak goal out of nowhere… and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no risk-free bet. Even when something looks obvious, it never really is. And yes, that means you can lose. At some point, that’s inevitable.
- The sensible move is to stay in control. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Do not touch money you need to live on. And above all: do not chase losses, it rarely ends well.
- A bet should stay a game, not a job or a source of income. If you feel it is taking up too much space in your life, making you angry or putting you under pressure, take a break. And if needed, speak to a specialist organisation. That’s what they’re there for.
- In the end, the responsibility is yours. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, even with the best analysis in the world.
- Essential reminder: betting is forbidden to minors and must comply with the law in your country. Gambling can spiral fast (money losses, family tension, addiction). Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.
No commitment from us
Our predictions are not a contract. They have no legal force. In plain terms: you cannot use them to demand anything if a bet fails.
Information changes
A prediction is always based on what is known at the time it is written. But in the meantime, a team sheet changes, a player gets hurt, the weather turns ugly… and the analysis can be outdated fast. We cannot be held responsible for that.
Your role
Before you bet, check that betting is legal where you are. If it is not, that is your responsibility, not ours.
Responsible gambling first
