Union Berlin have shipped seven goals in their first two Bundesliga matches. Schalke 04 have not scored a single one over the same spell.
One point apiece, but two teams heading in completely different directions. Union Berlin kick off Bundesliga matchday 3 this Friday at 20:30 in the cauldron of the An der Alten Foersterei, after a wildly messy start to the season.

Schalke have taken the opposite route. The newly promoted side began with a 3-0 defeat in Augsburg before holding Bayern Munich to a 0-0 draw in front of their own fans.
That result changed the mood around the Gelsenkirchen club. It still didn’t solve the main issue for Miron Muslic’s side, though, as they remain without a goal after 180 minutes.
The bookmakers tilt slightly towards the home side, with Union priced at around 2.10 for the win and Schalke roughly 3.20. The draw is about 3.70.
So this is a match between a defence that just shipped four and an attack that hasn’t hit the target once. The real question on the night is the goal total.
Union Berlin need to tighten up after the collapse at Leverkusen 
The 3-3 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt showed Union at their best. Trailing 3-1, the Eisernen fought back with their usual mix of effort, set pieces and second balls.
It was a comeback built in front of a crowd that really matters in the closing stages. The Alte Foersterei is never a comfortable away day.
None of that showed up at Leverkusen. Union conceded after just a minute and never got a grip on the game.
The final 4-0 scoreline could have been worse without Fredrik Ronnow, who made several important saves. Going forward, Berlin offered next to nothing.
Bayer sliced through Union’s back line repeatedly with very little resistance. Fixing that kind of damage in a week is rarely simple, but the problem tends to look smaller against an opponent that doesn’t attack in behind.
Across two matches, the defensive return is seven goals conceded. Four of those came against one of the most attack-minded teams in the division, which at least softens the edge of the number a little.
Back at home, Union should return to what they do best: a compact shape and cautious work in transition. That’s the most likely script after a beating like that.
A Friday night under the lights also suits this club down to the ground. Berlin do not need an open game to feel comfortable.

Schalke 04 shut out Bayern but still have not scored 
The 3-0 defeat in Augsburg was a brutal welcome back to the top flight. Michael Gregoritsch struck in the 18th minute and the newcomers never found a reply.
That trip marked Schalke’s return to Bundesliga action after three seasons away. The physical and technical gap was obvious for all 90 minutes.
Their response against Bayern caught plenty of people off guard. Schalke sat deep, won their duels and kept their shape through long spells of Munich pressure.
Loris Karius was one of the key figures in that 0-0, producing several crucial stops. Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Jamal Musiala, back in the side, found no way through.
That point will do the confidence of a squad new to this schedule a world of good. But it doesn’t hide the attacking problem: Schalke are still blank after two matches.
Defending with discipline will only get you so far over a full season. Muslic has to find a way to get his team higher up the pitch without losing the compactness that worked against Munich.
Robin Gosens will have a special night in Berlin. The 32-year-old full-back, signed by Schalke in the 2026 summer window, played for Union in 2023-2024 and has 39 Bundesliga matches for the Eisernen to his name.
After a few fitness issues early in the campaign, he has rejoined full training and was in the squad against Bayern. His profile fits almost exactly the hard-edged football Muslic wants to build.

Schalke have not scored a single goal in 180 Bundesliga minutes. A promoted side fresh from shutting out Bayern have no reason to ditch the defensive plan that delivered their only point.
Across the way, Union are coming off a 4-0 loss and will first look to rediscover some solidity in front of their own fans. Berlin are not built to follow that with another wild night this early in the season.
Both managers will go into Friday with the same priority: do not leave the back door open. That sort of setup rarely produces a four-goal game.
