Champions League: UEFA fines Lens and bans fans at Leipzig

Fine plus a travel ban

UEFA has hit Lens with an 80,000 euro fine over the behaviour of their supporters in the 3-0 Champions League defeat at Club Brugge last Wednesday. The governing body has also banned Lens fans from travelling to the club’s next away game in the competition, at Leipzig on 24 November, and attached a second, suspended travel ban.

L’Equipe reported the sanction on Tuesday evening.

Flares, again

In Bruges, the Lens section set off a large number of flares, and referee Luis Godinho briefly stopped the game. It was not the first time. During the 3-2 win in Prague on 10 September, the visiting fans also lit a lot of pyrotechnics. UEFA’s disciplinary body clearly noticed the repeat.

Lens have already acted

The club has taken a hard line of its own. Lens management has stopped its supporters from travelling to Friday’s derby at Lille.

The Leipzig ban means Cahuzac’s side will have no travelling support in Germany, in a competition where the team has already had one heavy night away from home. With the suspended ban hanging over the section, another incident could close the away end again.
