MLB: Melton blanks Seattle as Tigers open a cushion

Seven spotless innings from Melton

Detroit walked out of Seattle with an 8-0 win overnight. Troy Melton carried it, spinning seven scoreless innings and scattering three singles to Dominic Canzone, Randy Arozarena and Cal Raleigh, with two walks and four strikeouts. He is 7-1 now.

Look past the line score and it reads even better. This was Detroit’s second straight shutout and its third in six games. Pitching like that, at a point in the season when every run is currency, is a statement of its own.

Greene, Torres and Dingler go deep

The bats did their part. Riley Greene, Gleyber Torres and Dillon Dingler all homered, and Colt Keith opened the scoring with a two-run single in the third. Greene tacked on a solo shot in the fifth off starter Emerson Hancock, who fell to 6-6 with the loss.

The ninth turned into a pile-on. Four runs crossed against reliever Seranthony Dominguez, just arrived from the White Sox, as Torres and Dingler cleared the fence on back-to-back swings.

Wild-card race heats up again

Four straight wins for the Tigers, five in six. The part that matters most: Detroit has climbed back ahead of Seattle in the American League wild-card race. Taylor Ward, picked up from the Orioles at Monday’s deadline, had a quiet Mariners debut and went 0-for-3.
