Transfer talk : Aston Villa have never forgotten Alejandro Garnacho
Sometimes a deal only gets done at the second attempt. Aston Villa had already tried to lure Alejandro Garnacho before his move to Chelsea. Twelve months on, the club have come back for more and finally landed the Argentine winger on loan, proof his name never really dropped down the list despite a season that fell well short of expectations in London.
It is a move that feels like both an opportunity and a gamble. At Stamford Bridge, Garnacho never quite found the role he wanted in fierce competition for places. His eight goals and four assists in 43 appearances were not enough to make him undroppable, even if plenty still believe the talent is there.
A very different setting from Chelsea
In Birmingham, the demands will be different. Aston Villa wanted a wide player who could beat men and add some real bite in the final third. That is exactly why they had taken an interest in him a year ago, before Chelsea stepped in and got the deal over the line.
This time, the timing looks far better. Garnacho joins a squad where he should be able to get minutes quickly and, just as important, rebuild the confidence that has dipped at times over the past few months. At only 22, there is still plenty of room for him to grow, even if his path has been a lot bumpier since leaving Manchester United.
Try it for $0.99.
A loan that already looks like more than a loan
Officially, it is only a loan. In reality, everything suggests Aston Villa are already thinking bigger. The agreement includes an option to buy, understood to be worth 50 million euros, and that could become mandatory if a number of conditions are met, including a set number of appearances.
In other words, the club are not just betting on a short-term fix. If Garnacho gets back to his best, Villa are ready to build the next phase with him on a four-year deal. This time, their patience may well pay off.
