OL: Afonso Moreira set to join Bayer Leverkusen
The Afonso Moreira-Olympique Lyonnais story looks set to be over already. One of the breakout players of the season for Les Gones, the 21-year-old Portuguese winger is expected to join Bayer Leverkusen, who will pay a little more than 32 million euros including add-ons.
It is a move that was not necessarily on the player’s radar a few weeks ago, but it will help OL head into their next meeting with the DNCG a little more calmly.
The player had planned to stay in Lyon
In recent weeks, a departure was not the option Moreira had favoured. At 21, he had been thinking about spending another season between the Rhone and the Saone. He had only just signed a new deal through 2030, along with a salary increase.
But with the club’s finances what they are, the winger has now agreed to change course. Leverkusen, who finished sixth in the Bundesliga last season and qualified for the Europa League, have offered him a five-year contract. He now has a medical to clear before putting pen to paper.

A quick profit for the Lyon hierarchy
Signed less than a year ago from Sporting Portugal’s reserve side for around two million euros, Afonso Moreira quickly emerged as one of Lyon’s revelations of the season. His sale is a very tidy piece of business for OL, who will also keep a cut of any future resale. To cover the loss, the club are banking on Belgian Julien Duranville, signed from Borussia Dortmund for 5.5 million euros.
Even without Champions League football at Leverkusen, the German project has done enough to convince the Portuguese, who will be heading into the Bundesliga after just one season in Lyon colours.
