Toulouse vs Union Bordeaux-Begles: the four-time champions host the pace-setters in just round two
Sixty-four points for Union Bordeaux-Begles, zero in the standings for Toulouse. One round of Top 14 was all it took to open up a gap few saw coming.
Round two closes out the weekend with this one, scheduled for Sunday 13 September at 21:05, French time. Canal+ will show the match at the end of the multiplex.
Toulouse arrive as the four-time reigning French champions and sit 10th in the early table. Beaten 30-27 at La Rochelle on Sunday 6 September, the Haute-Garonne club let a game slip after leading before the break.
Bordeaux-Begles top the standings with five points, the maximum available after one round. The bonus-point win over Racing 92 came from a 64-5 rout nobody could have predicted at kick-off.
These two know each other inside out after repeated meetings over recent seasons, in the league and in Europe. But the balance of power right now is leaning in a pretty unusual direction.
That said, Toulouse are at home, and a response after an opening defeat has been part of their DNA through four straight titles. That is exactly what makes this one so hard to call.
Stade Toulousain have to put La Rochelle right
Toulouse went down 30-27 on the Stade Rochelais pitch in the opening round. They left with a losing bonus point and little else.
The game turned in the second half, with La Rochelle coming back after the interval. That sort of finish is rare for a side used to controlling the final 20 minutes.
Ugo Mola spoke about the truth of the first match after leaving Marcel-Deflandre, a phrase that says plenty about his read on the performance. The Toulouse coach knows his squad lacked sharpness after a long break.
The other issue is in the treatment room, which is looking crowded after the trip to Charente-Maritime. Several key forwards are missing, making preparation for a match of this intensity even trickier.
The club are chasing a fifth straight title, something no side has ever done in the history of the championship. That target means they cannot afford back-to-back slips.
At home, Toulouse remain a fearsome outfit, capable of upsetting any opponent with their tempo. That is where they will look for the answer.
Try it for $0.99.
Union Bordeaux-Begles have started the season with a statement
UBB hammered Racing 92 64-5 at Chaban-Delmas. Ten tries scored, one conceded: the numbers speak for themselves.
The match was done before half-time, with a 38-0 lead and six tries already on the board. Four of them came inside the first 15 minutes, including a Cameron Woki double.
Falatea and Pierre Bochaton added to the early punishment before a fifth try on 25 minutes. A card for Pkhakadze on 17 minutes barely slowed the Bordeaux machine.
Louis Bielle-Biarrey scored twice in the second half, just days after his new deal at the club was announced. The news clearly lifted the whole squad.
The result has to be taken in context against a Racing 92 side that completely fell apart, with Max Machenaud himself calling the first-half errors schoolboy stuff. Even so, Bordeaux’s attacking output sends a strong message.
Two-time European champions but outside the top six last season, UBB needed this kind of start. The trip to Toulouse will show what they are really made of.

Rugby Prediction Toulouse vs Union Bordeaux-Begles
Our prediction: Toulouse to win by at least 8 points
Toulouse have not lost two home games on the spin for a long time, and a poor start to the season only sharpens the focus. They are at home after a defeat, and that setup has usually suited them.
The 64-5 Bordeaux win came against a Racing 92 side in total collapse, who conceded six tries in 40 minutes and never answered. That tells us very little about UBB’s chances of standing up to the reigning champions on their own patch on a Sunday night.
Toulouse should take the three points and get their season moving. The bet is on a straight home win for the Haute-Garonne side.

First, a note on our free predictions
- What we publish on mathodds is analysis, nothing more. We share an opinion, a read on the current state of play, but never a guarantee. Sport is what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a freak goal… and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when something looks obvious, nothing really is. And yes, that means you can lose. It is inevitable at some point.
- The best approach is to stay sensible. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Do not touch money you need for everyday life. And above all: do not chase losses, it rarely ends well.
- A bet should stay a game, not a job or a source of income. If you feel it is taking up too much space in your life, if it is irritating you or putting you under pressure, take a break. And if needed, speak to a specialist organisation. That is what it is there for.
- In the end, responsibility is yours. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, even with the best analysis in the world.
- Essential reminder: betting is forbidden to minors and must follow the law in your country. Gambling can go wrong fast, with financial losses, family tension and addiction. Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.
No commitment from us
Our predictions are not a contract. They have no legal force. Put simply: you cannot use them to demand anything if a bet does not come through.
Information changes
A prediction is always based on what we know at the time it is written. But in the meantime, a team sheet changes (like Toulouse’s, for example), a player gets injured, the weather turns… and the analysis can quickly be out of date. We cannot be held responsible for that.
Your part
Before placing a bet, check that betting is legal where you are. If it is not, that is your responsibility, not ours.
