Four goals down, and a question of accountability
Rennes lost 4-0 at Lyon on Saturday night. Franck Haise had shuffled his side beforehand, and he stood by every one of those calls in front of the media afterwards.
Adrien Thomasson refused to leave his manager out on his own. “We knew full well the coach wanted to bring some freshness into the team. Tonight, sadly, we lost the match. But we all lost together.”
The midfielder took the argument to its end point. “There is no point focusing on the manager’s choices. We have no proof that if there had not been all those changes, we would have done better.”

A night to forget
As for the game itself, Thomasson did not try to dress it up. “When you lose 4-0, there is disappointment. It is a night to forget.”
He pointed to what turned the contest. Lyon’s sharp finishing from their first chance, then the transitions. “We knew they were dangerous in transition and they showed it.”
The rest, in his view, came down to individual mistakes. “I think we made errors that cost us quite a lot of goals.” And this, from a mixed zone interview on a night like that, was as honest as it gets: “We ran into a team that was better than us, and we have to admit that.”
The break comes at the right time
The schedule now offers some breathing space. The international break arrives straight after this one, and the Rennes man sees it as a chance. “The break will do us good, give us time to rest and recharge the batteries so we can go again in the next league match.”
In the table, Rennes remain clinging to the leading pack with ten points, while Lyon climb onto the podium after this win. The pecking order has not shifted much in one evening. The picture of a 4-0 defeat, though, takes a lot longer to fade.
