Two up, two points thrown away
Saint-Etienne were 2-0 ahead in Metz. The final score says 2-2. Ian Cathro did not dress it up.
“We had a game we should have won. We dropped two points. We had it in the bag,” the ASSE boss said on Saturday night after the Ligue 2 round seven fixture.
He went further. “We’re heading home saying we threw two points in the bin. We have ambitions, and we can’t afford to do that again.”

Two mistakes, two goals
The Scot pinpointed the problem. Two individual errors handed Metz their goals. “We can’t be a team that makes errors like that,” he said.
Cathro did not tear everything up, though. He praised his side’s burst after the break, the spell that had put them two goals clear away from home. The trouble came after that. Metz switched to two up front, and Saint-Etienne were left under pressure.
“When you’re 0-2 up away from home, it has to finish 0-2.” That sentence sums up what he wants. More control, more consistency.
A break to put things right
It is Saint-Etienne’s first draw of the season. It comes just before the international break.
The staff plan to use it. Two weeks to set priorities for the next two months, with one issue already in plain sight: how easily this side gives away chances once it loses its grip on a game.
