Two out, two on, 3-2 count
Los Angeles was 27 outs into a night that looked lost. Then Teoscar Hernandez ripped a two-run double into left-centre in the bottom of the ninth and the Dodgers walked off with a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals.
Tommy Edman started it. A one-out single, then a stolen base off right-hander Riley O’Brien. Mookie Betts worked a walk behind him. Hernandez got a sinker on a full count and did not miss it.
The sweep is avoided. Los Angeles sits at 83-57.

No Ohtani, and Edman filled the hole
Shohei Ohtani was not in the lineup. He struck out four times Wednesday and looked to be favouring his right arm, so the Dodgers sat him.
Edman slid into the leadoff spot and went 4-for-5. His fifth-inning double set up the other Los Angeles run, which came home on a Quinn Mathews wild pitch.
Tarik Skubal gave the Dodgers 5 2/3 innings, two runs on 10 hits, one walk, six strikeouts. His sixth start since the move.
St. Louis had this one and let it go
The Cardinals were up 2-0 and comfortable. Joshua Baez drove in the first with a single in the opening inning after Jose Fermin and Ivan Herrera reached. Ramon Urias doubled the cushion in the third.
Quinn Mathews, the Orange County rookie, was excellent in a way the box score half hides. One run over five innings in his fifth big-league start, pitching around four hits and four walks.
The Cardinals fall to 70-71, now 2-1 through a nine-game road trip that will settle their wild-card question one way or another.
