A departure nobody saw coming
He was at camp, ready to go again. Then, out of nowhere, he wasn’t.
Teddy Bridgewater is walking away. Dan Campbell shared the news on Sunday. The Detroit Lions backup quarterback is leaving the team just weeks before the season opener, and the staff now has to find a new No. 2 behind Jared Goff. Fast.
“Teddy Bridgewater is going to step away,” Campbell said. “I’ve known Teddy a long time. The person is incredible. The player too. We’re going to miss him.”

Eleven seasons, seven franchises
Bridgewater is 33. His career never followed a straight line. Think of it more as a road map with too many detours.
Vikings, Saints, Panthers, Broncos, Dolphins, Lions, Buccaneers. Seven jerseys, eleven seasons. He piled up 15,182 yards, 75 touchdowns and 47 interceptions on 66.3% passing across 83 games and 65 starts. Twenty-eight of those starts came in Minnesota between 2014 and 2017.
He had already retired once, after the 2023 season. Then came the return in December 2024. This time, the message lands differently.
So what now?
Campbell got the retirement question. He didn’t shut the door. “I think only he can really answer that. But I get the sense that’s where we’re at.” Then he dropped a line that says plenty: Bridgewater’s biggest worry was letting the team down.
That leaves a hole. Detroit does have a rookie on hand in Luke Altmyer, signed out of Illinois as an undrafted free agent. Not enough, and Campbell said so flatly. A veteran is due to arrive within days.
