Tasmania JackJumpers vs Melbourne United: Hobart tests United’s new firepower
The Tasmania JackJumpers host Melbourne United at MyState Bank Arena on Thursday 1 October, with tip-off at 11h30 Paris time. This is the third game of Round 3 and the first meeting of the season between these two clubs.
Both teams arrive at 1-1 after two games each, so this fixture decides who moves above .500 heading into the weekend. Tasmania have had more than a week off since their last game, while United have had a similar break since their win on 24 September.
The JackJumpers beat South East Melbourne 96-91 at home in Round 1, then lost 93-87 in Cairns two days later. United lost their opener 97-95 to Adelaide, then crushed the Phoenix 86-61 in the first Throwdown of the season.
The Phoenix offer a common opponent. Tasmania needed a big second half to beat them by five in Hobart, while United held that same team to 61 points and won by 25.
That difference in margin frames the contest. Tasmania bring home-court grit and a proven comeback habit, United bring star power and a defence that has just produced its best night of the season.
The crowd will play its part too, as MyState Bank Arena hosts only its second game of NBL27. Tasmania’s fans saw a 16-point comeback last time, and they will expect the same fight.
The weekend adds another layer. Tasmania travel to Brisbane on Saturday 3 October, while United host Cairns at John Cain Arena that same evening.
Tasmania JackJumpers Analysis
Scott Roth’s team is 1-1, with one win at home and one loss on the road. The home win came in dramatic fashion, as Tasmania trailed by as many as 16 points before turning the game around.
The JackJumpers scored 36 points in the third quarter on 14-of-19 shooting and outscored the Phoenix 58-39 after half-time. It was the kind of response that has become part of the club’s identity in Hobart.
That comeback also came with some controversy. A new disruptive play rule caused confusion late in the game, when Skylar Mays wrongly took free throws and the resulting turnover helped Tasmania.
The loss in Cairns came on the shortest possible turnaround, with a thin roster flying north two days after that comeback. They scored 87 points that night and never found the same second-half surge.
David Johnson led the Round 1 win with 26 points, six rebounds and six assists on 10-of-15 shooting. New recruit Taran Armstrong added 19 points, and Will Magnay and Dakota Mathias chipped in 14 each.
Armstrong looks like a strong addition, as his 19 points against the Phoenix came despite close defensive attention. Magnay remains the key presence around the basket, and his battle with Josh Oduro will matter on Thursday.
The main concern is the injury list. Josh Bannan, Ben Ayre, Anthony Drmic and Bryce Hamilton all missed the opener, and Majok Deng picked up a lower leg injury in that game, so Tasmania’s depth will be tested again against a deep United rotation.
Roth will hope that at least one of those players returns for this game. Any positive update on Bannan or Drmic before tip-off would change the picture for the hosts.

Melbourne United Analysis
Jacob Chance’s side are 1-1, but their two games tell a positive story. They lost the season opener by two points to Adelaide, one of the title favourites, then won the Throwdown by 25.
The Adelaide loss still carried plenty of positives. United pushed the 36ers to the final possession with Cole Anthony on a strict minutes limit, and they still scored 95 points.
The 86-61 win over the Phoenix was a defensive statement. Holding a team that had scored 100 points in Perth five days earlier to just 61 shows how well this group can defend when it is locked in.
United’s style relies on moving the ball around the perimeter and punishing opponents in transition. That approach helped them win three of four Throwdowns last season, and it looked sharp again last week.
Anthony is the headline act. The former NBA guard scored 30 points in only 22 minutes on debut and now averages 24 points per game, with Josh Oduro giving them a physical presence inside.
Oduro posted 14 points and six rebounds in limited minutes on debut. His size inside balances an attack that could otherwise lean too heavily on Anthony.
The decisive point for Thursday is freshness. United have not played since 24 September, so their main players should arrive in Hobart rested and with Anthony’s minutes restriction expected to ease further.

Our prediction: Melbourne United win
United’s 25-point win over the Phoenix compares very well with Tasmania’s five-point win over the same team. Cole Anthony gives them a scorer who can decide a game on his own, and the defence has already shown what it can do.
Tasmania will be tough at home, as always, but they are still dealing with a long injury list. Against a rotation as deep as Melbourne’s, that lack of bodies is likely to show in the fourth quarter.
Hobart is never an easy trip, and a close game is possible. The gap in available talent points towards the visitors.
We back Melbourne United to win in Hobart. Their talent and fresh legs make them the side to trust on Thursday.

About our free predictions
- What we publish on MathOdds are analyses, nothing more. We share a view, a reading of the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport remains what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a last-minute basket, and the script changes completely.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when it looks “obvious”, nothing ever is. And yes, that means you can lose. It’s even inevitable at some point.
- The smartest approach is to stay reasonable. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Never use money you need to live on. And above all: don’t chase your losses, that rarely ends well.
- A bet should remain a game, not a job or a source of income. If it starts taking up too much space in your daily life, causes stress or frustration, take a break. And if needed, talk to a support organisation: that’s what they’re there for.
- Ultimately, responsibility lies with you. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and will never disappear, no matter how good the analysis.
- Essential reminder: gambling is prohibited for minors and must comply with the laws of your country. Need help? Visit begambleaware.org.

Information changes
A prediction is always based on what we know at the time of writing. But between publication and tip-off, a lineup can change (like Tasmania JackJumpers’, for example), a player picks up an injury, and the analysis can quickly be outdated. We cannot be held responsible for that.
