Switzerland vs Algeria : a place in the history books is up for grabs
There will be no second bite at the cherry in Vancouver. Switzerland, solid throughout the group stage, are back in a setting they know well: knockout football. Algeria, meanwhile, are at this point in the competition for the first time in 12 years, since that run back in 2014. The Fennecs arrive full of optimism after scraping through as one of the best third-placed sides, but they now face a much sterner test against a Switzerland team that has barely put a foot wrong since the tournament began.
Switzerland are ticking along nicely
The Nati have not exactly set the tournament alight, but they have done the job in style. After drawing with Qatar, Murat Yakin’s side stepped up to beat Bosnia-Herzegovina and Canada, finishing top of Group B with seven points.
This is a team that looks like it knows exactly where it is going. Granit Xhaka sets the tempo in midfield, Manuel Akanji brings the experience at the back and Johan Manzambi has emerged as one of the stories of this World Cup, with three goals from three shots on target. Switzerland are not flooding forward, but when the big moments arrive, they tend to take them.
Algeria want to keep the dream alive
Algeria’s route here has been anything but smooth. Thumped by Argentina in their opening game, Vladimir Petkovic’s men responded against Jordan before nicking qualification in a wild 3-3 draw with Austria.
The Fennecs have plenty of attacking threats, with Riyad Mahrez, Amine Gouiri and Ibrahim Maza, who has looked particularly sharp on the ball since the tournament started. The worry is Mohamed Amoura, whose fitness remains uncertain. His pace in behind changes the whole picture for Algeria, especially when they are up against a well-drilled defensive block.
Probable line-ups :
Switzerland : Kobel; Jaquez, Elvedi, Akanji, Rodriguez; Freuler, Xhaka; Sow, Manzambi, Vargas; Embolo
Algeria : Zidane; Belghali, Mandi, Bensebaini, Ait-Nouri; Boudaoui, Bentaleb; Mahrez, Maza, Chaibi; Gouiri

2026 World Cup Prediction : Switzerland vs Algeria
Under 2.5 goals (90 minutes)
This clash brings together two teams with very different styles, but with the same aim: keep the door shut. Switzerland are built on discipline and rarely concede in bunches. For months, Murat Yakin’s side have based their results on balance and structure rather than any real fireworks up front. Algeria have more tools to hurt teams in transition, but they could be without Mohamed Amoura, whose runs beyond the defence make a huge difference to their attack. The Fennecs also know they cannot get stretched against a Switzerland side that is extremely efficient once it gets in front.
In a knockout tie where managing the bad spells will be vital, both teams are likely to put caution first. A tight game, decided by a moment or a dead-ball situation, looks very much on the cards.
in your pocket.

First, a quick word on our predictions
- What we publish on mathodds is analysis, nothing more. We share an opinion, a read on the moment, but never a guarantee. Sport is what it is: unpredictable. A red card, an injury, a goal out of nowhere… and the whole script changes.
- Let’s be clear: there is no such thing as a risk-free bet. Even when something looks “obvious”, it never really is. And yes, that means you can lose. At some point, you will.
- The smart move is to stay sensible. Bet small, set a budget and stick to it. Do not touch money you need to live on. And above all: do not chase your losses. That rarely ends well.
- A bet should stay a bit of fun, not a job or a source of income. If it starts to take up too much space in your life, if it annoys you or puts you under pressure, take a break. If needed, speak to a specialist organisation. That is what they are there for.
- At the end of the day, the responsibility is yours. Reading our content means accepting that risk exists and never goes away, even with the best analysis in the world.
- Essential reminder: betting is forbidden to minors and must comply with the law in your country. Gambling can spiral fast, leading to money problems, family tension and addiction. Need Help? Call 1-800-GAMBLER. In the UK? Visit https://www.gambleaware.org/https://www.gambleaware.org/.
No commitment from us
Our predictions are not a contract. They have no legal standing. In plain English: you cannot use them to claim anything if a bet does not come off.
Information changes
A prediction is always based on what is known when it is written. But in the meantime, a team sheet changes, a player gets injured, the weather turns… and the analysis can quickly be out of date. We cannot be held responsible for that.
Your role
Before you bet, check that betting is legal where you live. If it is not, that is your responsibility, not ours.
Responsible gambling first
We cannot say it enough: gamble in moderation. If you struggle to keep control, do not wait to seek help. We cannot be responsible for compulsive or excessive use of the information published on the site.
Legal age
mathodds content is for adults only. By browsing here, you confirm that you are old enough in law to bet.
