Twenty-six minutes, three goals, one Japanese forward
Yuito Suzuki needed less than half an hour of match time to finish Werder Bremen off. Freiburg won 4-1 at the Europa-Park Stadion on Sunday afternoon and opened their Bundesliga campaign with three points and a goal difference most clubs wait weeks to build.
Suzuki broke the deadlock on 29 minutes, converting a Beste delivery. Igor Matanovic doubled it right before the interval from a Matthias Ginter ball. Bremen walked off at half-time already looking beaten.
Then came the restart. Suzuki scored on 48 minutes. He scored again on 55. That was the afternoon settled.

Four goals, four different assists
Here is the number Freiburg will enjoy most: every one of their four goals came from a different creator. Beste, Ginter, Scherhant, Matanovic. One each.
Matanovic managed both sides of it, scoring once and laying on Suzuki’s third just before the hour, the goal that took the contest away from Bremen entirely.
Suzuki was the story though. He arrived to give this attack something sharper in the final third. Three goals on the opening weekend answers that question quickly.
Werder salvaged a goal and little else
Bremen’s reply came far too late. Karol Stalmach turned in a Marco Grull cross on 76 minutes, by which point the scoreboard had stopped mattering.
Four conceded in the first match of a season is the kind of thing that follows a defence around. At least Werder’s staff know precisely which part of the pitch to spend the week on.
Freiburg, for their part, leave with a level of confidence nobody in Baden-Wurttemberg expected to be carrying in late August.
