One counter ends a quick fight
Kody Steele needed a single shot. Facing Noah Gugnon on the early card at UFC 333 in Abu Dhabi, the American caught the Frenchman with a counter that, according to RMC Sport’s live coverage, landed behind the head. Gugnon went down and the fight was stopped in the first round.
Gugnon had done most of what his corner would have wanted. Steele, a grappler, dived in at the opening bell, and the Frenchman escaped both takedown attempts. When Steele later pulled him to the floor, Gugnon walked straight to the fence and got back up. He also had a moment of his own, putting Steele down with a counter and choosing to let him stand rather than chase the ground game.

What it means for both men
Gugnon, 26, arrived with ten wins, every one of them inside the distance: six by knockout and four by submission. This was only his second fight in the UFC, after beating Milos Janicic in Belgrade this summer, and he went in as a slight underdog. He now has a third defeat on his record.
Steele improves to 9-1 as a professional, by RMC’s count, and 2-1 in the UFC. Steele also landed a heavy shot on Gugnon’s eyebrow earlier in the round, before the finish came.
