NHL: Stamkos sinks old club Tampa Bay in a Nashville shootout

Stamkos finishes it against his old team

Steven Stamkos spent years captaining the Tampa Bay Lightning. On Saturday night in Nashville he beat them twice. The Predators won 5-4 in a shootout, and the former Lightning captain scored both of the goals that mattered most.

His first came at 7:27 of the third period, a power-play goal that tied the game at 4-4. His second came in the fourth round of the shootout, a backhander past Andrei Vasilevskiy that was the only goal of that round. Vasilevskiy had made 29 saves before it.

Reid Schaefer, with his first goal of the season, Adam Edstrom and Jayden Struble also scored for Nashville.

A first for Annunen, and a first for Nashville

Justus Annunen made 22 saves, four of them in the shootout. It was the first shootout he had faced in 83 career games. For the Predators, the result also ended a frustrating pattern: it was their first win in six overtime games this season.

Nikita Kucherov had three assists for Tampa Bay, a night after reports said he had asked the club for a trade. He set up three goals and still lost.
