Football: St. Louis City Hit 17 Unbeaten, Rout Red Bulls

Navarro strikes early

St. Louis City keep refusing to lose. Rafael Navarro opened the scoring in the fifth minute at the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday night, converting a second-phase chance after a free kick. Simon Becher doubled the lead in the 87th minute and Tomas Ostrak sealed a 3-0 win in stoppage time.

Roman Burki finished with his third clean sheet of the season, needing just four saves. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting came closest for the hosts in the second half, but a defensive block denied him.

Closing in on the record

The win extends St. Louis’ unbeaten run to 17 matches, the best in MLS. The club sits on 47 points at 13-6-8, second in the Western Conference and three behind Vancouver.

The all-time MLS record is 19 games without a loss, set by Columbus in 2004-05 and matched by Dallas in 2010. St. Louis is two matches away from equaling it, and three from owning it outright.

A Red Bulls side stretched thin

New York (9-12-6, 33 points) stays eighth in the Eastern Conference. The Red Bulls were hit by 10 international call-ups during the break. They created chances but could not finish any of them.
